Bluetooth connectivity with IOS 9.3

I have been struggling to connect my Vivoactive with my Iphone 6. Apparently IOS 9.3 has bluetooth 4 ( pardon my ignorance in the IT terms) and could potentially not be backwards compatible? The phone does pick up newer bluetooth devices, but not older ones. Will there be an update from Garmin's side soon or should I downgrade my Apple Software?
( I have just installed the updates from Garmin and it is still not working )

I'm using an iPad Air, running iOS 9.3.1 (and iOS 9.3 before that), and can connect my Forerunner·235 to it with no issue, so it's definitely not a limitation in the operating system, which supports Bluetooth Low Energy (aka Bluetooth Smart) on devices with compatible hardware.
