Fenix 3 won't sync

I was syncing my Fenix 3 this morning and it was taking forever. I assumed that something had frozen up. The bar was stuck at about 75%. So I did something I probably shouldn't have. I disconnected the watch from my computer. When I tried it again I got a message saying there were updates so I clicked yes but the updates failed. This morning's bike ride successfully uploaded but now every time I connect the watch to my PC it fails to sync. I don't get the gradually growing bar but rather just a short bar repeatedly swiping from left to right. I turned the watch completely off and let it sit for a while and tried it again but got the same results. I also remembered that when I started my bike app this morning before the ride it prompted me about an update but I said "no" so I could start riding right away. Now I'm thinking the initial attempt to sync that took so long was probably trying to do the update. Any suggestions?
Have you tried to power the watch down by pressing and holding the light button for 15-20 sec, wait a minute or so, and then turn it back on by pressing the light button for a couple of second?
