Sudden decrease in "resting calories?"

Former Member
Former Member
Hey guys, recently my GC app has drastically cut what it calculated as my resting calories. I'm 5'11, 167 pounds. It was calculating my resting to be 2040 which is spot on for my TDEE.

Two days ago something changed, and my resting went down to 1720. What gives? I've changed nothing.

Has anyone else seen this?
  • same here. They really should fix it asap. My resting calories -according to a specific measurement done by personal trainer- are 1800. Today, after working all morning and a cardio exercise (TRX) in the afternoon according to fenix 3 I've burned 1669 calories!!! Yeah right...

Well, to be fair Garmin is counting your resting calories as the day goes by, it doesn't show them immediately. Your full resting calories will only show when the day ends, midnight.

So depending on when you're typing this, it may be pretty accurate. Assuming it's around noon that you wrote this, you'd only be 900 calories through your 1800 resting calories for the day. Which means the other 700 have come from activity, and if you were to do nothing but sleep for the rest of the day you'd end up at roughly 2500 calories for the day.

Unfortunately my day ended up with 1834 calories, I think 200 or 300 less. After the update the only way the calories to be showed correctly is to have a HR either atouched to your chest, or having the Fenix 3 HR version to your wrist. Therefore, I believe they made the Fenix 3 without HR useless on measuring calories. This must be fixed and fast.
  • Happening to me as well with Forerunner 920XT

Running software version 7.10. It's been in effect since Saturday, May 14, which I think is when I upgraded the software. Please fix, Garmin!

The last few days I've noticed something a little weird with calories. It looks like Connect is showing more active calories than my Fenix 3 is reporting. This has occurred before as a bug that was fixed a few months ago. The bug could be back but it might also be Garmin correcting the calorie calculation by increasing the calorie "value" of activity to make up for the fact that the resting calories are now straight BMR. It would make sense that the change would happen on Connect first since to change the trackers requires firmware updates. This could actually be more accurate than the old formula but it could also just be a bug.
  • Seems to be related to firmware rollouts

I noticed that, according to the May 12 release of firmware for my Forerunner 920XT, the update includes "Various Activity Tracking improvments." I have to assume that that is the culprit. I can't find any details, though, about the specifics of said "improvements."

It's taking me around 7000 steps just to break even at my TDEE???

Has Garmin taken an official stance on this or offered an explanation my calories with MFP are all over the place and it's making me lose confidence in what I can eat...

Is it possible Garmin believes this more accurate?

Garmin support confirmed it is an intentional change but no explanation.

I did speculate to myself maybe they want people wearing their new wrist heart rate watches and will be somehow using 24 hour heart rate to monitor calories but if so why change the base calories until the system is in place?

Obviously MFP need to adjust their calculations from Garmin's data somewhat.
  • Now they have sent me an official "explanation".

Except it isn't a very good one :(

"Many customers look to calorie burn to manage many facets of their workout program. With that said, there are many different ways to calculate calorie burn and there are competing theories as to which is more accurate.
We can all agree that the discussion about calorie burn is one that has many sides, multiple ways of being calculated, and can more than likely be discussed for an infinite amount of time.
We do value the information everyone has provided and we do consider this information critical to improving our products, which calculates calories through heart rate and user profile. We also acknowledge that there are many factors that can contribute to a calorie burn more or less than expected. Some of these factors may be, but are not limited to, running efficiency, very low workout intensity, inaccurate comparisons, etc...
Garmin will continue to investigate which of the above factors are true and refine any area that may challenge the caloric expenditure for specific users. Again, we appreciate all users input and passion to improve our products and the accuracy in the data they provide."

    Dobbsi-

Since you might get more traction than I on this since you have a complaint in:

-They should tell us which formula they are using (unless it's proprietary which it may be.)

-They need to add a graph into GC that is the same as the 24hr Heart Rate graph, only letting us see calories burned over time. It ought to have lines for BMR, tracked activites, and cals burned during an actual step. That leaves a 4th line for any other calories computed where they find we aren't fully at rest but are not taking any steps either.

Then we can each look at what they record and act individually on the results for ourselves since we know what those results are.

"You can't improve using data when the data is as clear as mud."
