Sudden decrease in "resting calories?"

Hey guys, recently my GC app has drastically cut what it calculated as my resting calories. I'm 5'11, 167 pounds. It was calculating my resting to be 2040 which is spot on for my TDEE.

Two days ago something changed, and my resting went down to 1720. What gives? I've changed nothing.

Has anyone else seen this?
  • I really wish Fitbit would make a reliable and durable running watch.
A consumer's lot is full of compromises, from which he/she has the prerogative and power to choose what is most advantageous (as opposed to perfect or ideal) and least irksome. Given I don't care at all about estimating my body's energy consumption, I'll happily settle for Garmin's reliable and durable running watch over a TomTom (which I had, but returned for lack of reliability) or Fitbit (my girlfriend has the Charge HR) product for my money any day. :D
  • Having the same problem. Good and reliable hardware is worth nothing if they can't get the software right. Both resting and active calories are WRONG!

Yeah but truth be told i had been bitten by an infected. My bmr dropped to zero and only nutrition i want is brains

    Brains
    Brains!!!

    Exactly.
  • One thing I do notice is over there last two days, the active calories from ”steps" is much higher than previous. I wonder if Garmin has upped the reward for moving and dropped the baseline at the same time?
  • If so they shouldn't be. The resting calories should match TDEE. Plus on days with a lot of exercise that doesn't involve steps (I'm a biker) it will create a false adjustment.
  • I've just noticed this over the last 2 days, when I last updated both watch firmware and GC Connect mobile. My background calories have dropped by about 300 cals.

I have the same issue; my (what I assume is TDEE was 1750) went down to 1430 on Garmin connect resting calories. I suppose technically the 1430 is correct if I was to be making no movements throughout day. I have negative adjustments enabled on MFP and would usually need to take around 3000 steps to "break even" at TDEE, and would begin to earn calories above this. It'll be interesting to see today how long it take's me to break even with no recorded runs.

It's confusing to say the least, and I know lots of users use the Garmin alongside MFP to adjust their eating and have an element of control over their weight.

I'm currently at 5000 steps. MFP has me at a negative of 70 odd calories. I would've definitely started to earn calories before garmin changed to resting calories.

Can I please have my calories back Garmin??
This method throws the accuracy which I'm sure has been working to some extent for many users.

Garmin, PLEASE give us our old calorie calculations back.

Would would be even better, is allowing us to choose our own BMR multiplier. I would LOVE to be able to choose "BMR x 1.2" or something like that, to get closer to a true value, which would be TDEE.

GC keeps telling me that my resting calories are 1700, which is my BMR. The calories I get from steps is only 100 or so, the rest come from activities. So on a normal day of just relaxing and not working out, GC tells me I burn roughly 1850 calories.

There's just no way that's correct.
