I got a PB for a 5K run today, my previous PB was for an exactly 5K run, Todays run was 5.37k. The PB for 5k has not changed even though i took of 30secs is this normal?
  • With PR's there can be a difference between devices. For example, some watches know about PR's, and detect new ones, and some devices don't (such as the vivoactive).

For watches that know about PR's I've seen them passed back to GC, and work a bit different from when GC looks at a run and tries to figure out PR's.

For example, I did a hard reset on a watch that understands PRs, and had never sent my past PRs to the watch, and I did a 4.2 mile event. When I was done, I had new PR's for fastest mile, fastest 5k, and longest run, and those got sent to GC, and were waiting for approve/reject in GC.

In GC you can also go to the full page list of activities, select one, and then assign a PR to it.
  • As far as I understand, GC works exactly as you described - you have to be quite precise in distance to set activity as PR.

To match PR's on GC, you have to match distances closely.

My current 5K personal record was set from an activity with a total distance of 7.58km. (The activity that set the personal record is linked in the personal records table, so there is absolutely no doubt or mistake.)

Same for me. I did a 1.4k run last saturday and was credited PB for 1mile, 5k and 10k from the same activity

Did you mean a 14km run?

People are confusing Garmin Connect personal record calculation and the more sophisticated behaviour of some (but not all!) Garmin devices.
If you rely on Garmin Connect, your activity distance must be very close to the personal record distance if it is to be recognised automatically (by GC) on upload.
If you have a "better" watch, it will extract a personal record from a longer activity.

From my experience with FR235, after a 15K run it shows new records for 1k, mile, 5K and 10K
After syncing to GC I just have to accept or decline the new records on GC's personal records page.
  • Same for me. I did a 10.4k run last saturday and was credited PB for 1mile, 5k and 10k from the same activity

My experience is from using a F3 HR
  • I have a 235 - my 5k and 10k PR were both set this spring while doing a long run of 10-11miles or so... so it works!

When you happened to upload the activity the server could have been wack - could (?) if it is still on your watch.... delete the activity from your online account and then go to the manual import, and importing the .tcx file of the activity.

I have had to do that to get stuff proper on my garmin-MapMyRun account in the past....

I don't think we're confusing anything. I, for one, was talking about my personal records as reported in Garmin Connect, and from my reading, the fellow forum member who started this thread was asking about his/her personal records as reported in Garmin Connect.

It's fair enough to say that there are two distinct scenarios for how personal records are calculated, depending on the tracking device used to capture and provide the activity data to Garmin Connect.
