activity data from two devices not merging

I am using a Garmin Oregon 600 and a vivosmart hr to track the same activity. It was my understanding that if the same activity was imported from two different devices, it would merge, but it'sshowing up on mine as two separate activities. Am I misunderstanding how this works, or just doing something wrong?
