Open Street Maps edits not available when creating new course

Does anyone know how long it takes for new paths I've added in OpenStreetMap (OSM), to be available when creating courses in Garmin Connect? I made the edits a few days ago, and they're still not available.
  • Wow, do you really expect them to be added so quickly? You will need to be a little more patient :)
  • Why shouldn't the updates be available immediately?
  • Why shouldn't the updates be available immediately?

Because there's more than one person in the world adding stuff.
  • Hopefully I'll get a useful response to my question at some point, someone who maybe knows what they're talking about.
  • I think you'll find that we both know what we're talking about, with posts in the thousands and with many years using Garmin products :)
  • Perhaps you could answer my original question then? And maybe explain a little about how the process works?
  • There isn't an answer as there are far too many variables. As for the process, look at

  • I've been making my edits on openstreetmap.org. The updates were available on their Standard Layer almost immediately. The updates are not however available when trying to create my route in Garmin Connect.

I have spoken with some guys there at OSM, and they said that companies who use OSM, may cache the data and only update at intervals. If this is the case, then there is a process Garmin Connect uses to pull updates from OSM, so how often is this process run? That's all I'm trying to find out.
  • Well for that you'd need to ask Garmin, but I'm confident their answer will be the same ... it depends.

Just think about it. Garmin aren't sitting there waiting for someone to update the OSM map data so they can then immediately upload it. Neither is anyone else who uses OSM map data to produce their own maps that folks can use. Some update their maps every week or so, others every couple of months and others possibly never.

Anyone who works to a cycle will tell you it depends ... for one thing it will depend when you upload the correction and how soon after that they draw the data down and produce their map. If you amend early in that cycle the delay will be longer than if you amend the data just before they pull it down from OSM.

In actual implementation the process varies. Various mapping sites seem to pick up new data at various rates. GPSIES is the fastest in my experience, usually updating within a few days. RideWithGPS and PlotARoute are usually under a month. Other sites that use the Mapbox engine (is engine the right term here?) seem to take over a month. I think that, in general, Mapbox pulls in updates a bit slower than Graphopper (which is what GPSIES uses).

For Garmin Connect specifically, the time frame would appear to be measured in months. Some trails that I added in my area 3 months ago still don't show up in Garmin Connect. I haven't done much investigation as to the why here, these are just my informal observations from making OSM edits and waiting to see them appear someplace that I can use them.
