Active Calories in Garmin Connect (website + ios app)

Hi,

I have a garmin edge 800 and a fenix 3 HR.

During the day I wear my fenix, but when cycling I don't wear it but track my ride (indoor/outdoor) with my Edge 800 (+ HR strap).

Within Connect I see my ride as activity on my heartrate graph from my fenix etc, so there it integrates nicely.

When I look on the Calories overview screen, I see my Fenix active calories (from daily activity) and my cycling burned calories from my Edge.
These values are correctly summarized in the overview screen

So you see for the 19th of april, there is a green part (+- 300 active calories daily activity)
and there is a red part (indoor cycling) for about 550 cal

in the day-listview this is summarized correctly (876).

When you clickthrough to the specific day details I only get to see the fenix 3 daily activity calories (+- 300)

Now, for days where I have a combination of daily activity calories + edge activity calories, it seems that on the MyFitnessPal calories in/out screen, the Garmin connect can't deal with this because this is what I see:

apart from the broken MyFitnessPal sync,

- the active calories only display the fenix daily active calories (so this does not include the edge cycling activity calories
- the 'goal' calories (I don't know if in the english app this is the correct name) remain empty (this is the daily used calories when in rest

Basically this should display the goal calories (when resting so around 1800 for me) + Active calories (=daily active calories + calories from other activities tracked fi by Garmin Edge device).
Then you can substract the MyFitnesspal data to have a correct view on your day.

Doesn't seem too hard to have this work correct, no ?
  • Active Calories Calculation

I've recently experienced a VERY similar issue. I'm wondering if somewhere recently, there was a change in Garmin Connect with how calories are calculated/tallied.

I have a particular day I'm looking at which has the same exact experience you describe. I wear a fenix3 daily, but use Edge 520 for cycling. I performed a 100mile ride last week which my Edge 520 shows burned ~3200 calories. That, added with my daily resting calorie expenditure and daily activity (general walking around and moving)...I vividly remember seeing ~5000+ calories displayed for Total, in the Garmin Connect Mobile app (the screen with the 3 circles in your second screenshot). But NOW, as I look back on last week's data, I'm seeing a mere ~2000 calorie total on that screen for the same day. It's as if they changed the calculation algorithm or something and re-applied to ALL previous records?

I usually don't follow the calculation specifics too much, but I know enough to realize something has clearly changed. Because I'm also experiencing situations where my "Active Calories" total) the right green circle in your screen shot, are EXTREMELY less than an activity performed that day. For example, let's say I performed a cycling activity burning ~800 calories, yet my "Active Calories" total may show something like ~300. Makes absolutely no sense. So it is, in fact, as if they are not including the other device's activity calories anymore? And per my situation described in the above paragraph, seems to me this perhaps used to integrate fairly well between devices...where Garmin Connect would mesh the calorie totals from devices...at least it seemed to me like appropriate totals. But something is clearly different now.

I just installed a recent update to my Edge 520 over the weekend...so not sure if that's a cause either.
  • Issues with Active Calories

Hi - I have the same problem (I use Garmin Vivosmart-HR and Garmin Forerunner 920). My active calories usually total, but as of yesterday, teh app ignores my swim calories (from forerunner) and only shows the step calories from teh Vivosmart.

You should contact support and let them know that you also have this issue!

  • Hey guys,

I just checked this morning and it seems to be fixed again...

so now the total active calories is the summary of all activities (I checked on the last day I did an indoor bikeride with my edge 800 ).

The 'active calories' is the sum of fenix3 regular daily active calories + calories from my edge bikeride...

besides this, the myfitnesspal integration/sync seems to be fixed also, so the total active calories / consumed calories seems to be ok for now :-)
  • Active Calories in Garmin Connect

Interesting. I checked mine as well and everything seems to be back as it was too. Calorie totals from previous days are now larger and appear to be including both calorie expenditure from both devices (fenix3 and Edge 520 for me). Even the back-dated day I referenced above, now shows ~5000 calories again. I wonder if there was just some sort of glitch in the calculations? Garmin maybe doing some work in the background. Oh well, seems to be working now so I'm good.

Almost forgot. I also submitted a question to Garmin Support immediately following my post above, re-iterating this same issue. So will be interesting what they have to say.
  • Just wanted to let you know that on my app calories weekview it's still not ok:

The previous weeks seem to be ok, graphs look fine (all positive bars) and the lister with daily info is correct (all positive values)
