Different types of pace

I've done some digging but cannot find an answer to this but apologies if it's there and I've missed it.

Can someone tell me the difference between average pace and average moving pace? It varies by a few seconds per mile on standard runs and I've never been bothered. I assumed the device thought I'd stopped for a moment, or whatever.

But I did some 1/4-mile intervals with 3-min recoveries. They came in at about 1:41 to 1:45 per rep, with varying paces. For example, moving time 1:42, average pace 7:07 m/m, average moving pace 6:50 m/m, best pace 7:10 m/m. That doesn't tally. Each rep was started already at pace and done flat out so I'd not be pleased if the FR920xt thought I was standing still :)

So what are the differences between the paces and if I just want to know how fast I was going, which metric tells me? Thanks in advance!
  • Can someone tell me the difference between average pace and average moving pace?

(Avg Pace) = (Time) / (Distance)
(Avg Moving Pace) = (Moving Time) / (Distance)

Applies to both the Stats tab and the Splits tab.

    Essentially.

Did you set your FR920XT up to use ‘Smart’ Data Recording, or ‘Every Second’? It looks like there is something to do with the error arising from the limitation that GPS tracking cannot decide how long it took you to travel exactly 0.250 miles.

So what are the differences between the paces and if I just want to know how fast I was going, which metric tells me?
    I'd use Avg Moving Pace.
  • Ah-ha, the device was set to smart recording. I've put it to every second.

Thank you for the explanation; understood.
