Analysis of distance within a longer workout

Can I see an analysis of a specific distance in a longer workout? For example, can I pull a 5k out of my 8 mile run? Even better would be to specify when the shorter activity would start and end. For example, being able to analyze my run starting at mile 2 through mile 5.

Thanks!

If you've marked it out as a lap on your watch while you were running, yes.

After the fact, in Garmin Connect online, as if it were a fully-featured data analysis package for the user to select and/or group collections of raw activity data captured by the watch and synced to the Garmin Connect service's database in the cloud? No.

Even better would be to specify when the shorter activity would start and end.
Again, you have to do so with a plan, and ‘specify’ the start and end points using laps while you run. Laps are mutually exclusive and cannot overlap each other, cannot be altered later, and cannot be arranged in any other hierarchy than moment→lap→activity. That means if you want to be able to see summary values of performance metrics for a 5km run, as well as summary values for individual 1km segments, you need to mark out 1km laps (which can be conveniently done by auto-laps), but you cannot decide afterwards to get Garmin Connect to give you summary values over the final 2km or 2.5km.

Thank you for the clear/comprehensive answer.
