Time in Zones Graph

I've recently updated my heart rate zones based on realistic maximum and resting heart rates. I did this on the Garmin Connect App on my phone, and I've checked that it has updated on line, and that it has synced with my watch.

Once my run is recorded the stats seem to show what I would expect; eg. for my last run, my average heat rate zone was 3.8 and my maximum 5.5. But when I look at the graphs to show "time in zones" it shows the charts relating to the old heart rates (for my last run it is saying I spent 71% of my run in HR zone 5, but it was more like 10%). The graphic on the watch also shows me in a higher zone than I actually am.

Does anybody know if I have forgotten to update a setting somewhere?

You'll probably want to check what your watch says about your heart rate zones (Menu»My Stats»User Profile»Heart Rate Zones»Zones), since the responsibility of determining Time in Zones rests and writing the summary into the activity's record rests with the watch and not Garmin Connect. There were problems with Heart Rate Zones settings not syncing to the watch previously, which have since been (somewhat) fixed.

Also keep in mind that changing HR Zones settings will not retrospectively change (or ‘fix’) the Time in Zones information on record for previously completed activities.

    Thanks.

I've checked the watch and everything is up to date. I it looks like the Garmin Connect interpretation that is off. I've tried to upload a screen shot to show what I'm talking about but it wont allow me to.

For my run yester day, on the run summary, at the bottom of the page when 'Stats' is selected and I look at Heart Rate - Zones it shows I maxed out at zone 3.7. When I switch the view to "Time in Zones" and look at the bar chart, it shows 21% in zone 5, and 69% in zone 4 even though I didn't get into zone 4 at all.

I don't use my heart rate monitor to drive my training, but it is interesting to get a summary of how hard I've been working.
  • Training Effect is not the HR Zone of the Max HR recorded for an activity

Are you sure you aren't confusing Training Effect with the zone of your highest heart rate recorded for the activity? (screenshot)

I don't think so. It says "Heart Rate Zones" directly above the graph, and I have to select "Zones" under the "Heart Rate" section in the stats view.

Ah, I see. I don't know the answer, then. For the activity in that screenshot, my Max HR is 5.5z under Zones. (The lower threshold for my Zone 5 is 174 bpm, and Max HR in my user profile is 186 bpm, so 180 bpm is exactly halfway between them.)

Perhaps you can share the activity in question by giving the URL to it, and ensure the privacy setting for that individual activity is such that everyone case see it?

Here is a URL to one of my runs:

    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1118794891

It's happens for all of them, but this one shows it quite well. Compare "Stats"-"Heart Rate"-"Zones" (Which I believe is showing the correct information), with "Time in Zones" - "Heart Rate Zones" (the bar chart, which doesn't seem to correlate to my heart rate data).

    Thank you for that.

Alas, as I've only just noticed, others don't see the (_bpm_|_%·of·Max_|_Zones_) controls when you share an activity – presumably because it would leak ‘private’ information about your current Max HR and HR Zones settings, and/or because the %MaxHR and Zones values dynamically calculated.

with "Time in Zones" - "Heart Rate Zones" (the bar chart, which doesn't seem to correlate to my heart rate data).
These are written into the activity record when the activity is completed and saved on the watch, using the MaxHR and Zone thresholds on the device at the time.

As an experiment, I went and changed my Zone 5 (lower) threshold to 181 bpm, and when I revisited my activity that was shown in the screenshot earlier, the Max HR zone became 4.9z, but of course the Time in Zones information – specifically, the % of time I spent in Zone 5 – remained unchanged.

I've just double checked my watch. My zone 5 band is set to 195-210bmp (it has been for a while, and was set well before the run I shared).

My max HR for the run was 174bmp so I was nowhere near zone 5 although it shows me in it for 21% of the time.

I can hold a high heart rate considering my age and 174bmp would normally be on the lower threshold of z5 using the 220-age rule of thumb, so I just presumed I'd forgotten to change something.

The only other thing I can think of is custom HR Zones that are set separately for Running and Cycling in Garmin Connect to override the ‘default’ thresholds. However, they don't work on the FR235. Which model of watch are you using?

    I'm using the FR225.
