reset 40 km record

I mistakenly let GC set my 40K record for a roller session that was significantly faster than I could ride 40K on teh road. I deleted that record, thinking the program wuold reset to the next fastest record, but that apparently isn't the case, and I can't figure out how to get GC to reevaluate my rides to rank or find the fastest 40K. Any ideas?

  • I know you can go to a workout and in the upper right 'Setting' wheel/gear/sprocket thing you can select "Set as PR" - so if you have a known other PR.... that would work i think. Not sure how it would work if/since the 40k might be in the middle of a workout...

One way of 'bookmarking' my old PR's is by selecting the 'Star' (Favorite in upper right) them as they happen.

This is all from the Garmin Connect website

I tried that by selecting a fast century I did. It set my best 40K to 4 hrs 45 min - the total time of the century (not a very fast time for 40k!). I'm pretty sure I had a sub 1 hour 40K somewhere on that ride, but it didn't show up.

I don't think that Garmin Connect will "extract" a best time for 40km from a longer ride. It only generates a record if the total ride is very close to 40km - even then, it gives the time for the whole ride as the record, not the best 40km!

It extracts the fastest 40k when you initially ride it. My former PRs were on longer rides when it successfully parsed out the fasted 40k, sort of like how it shows the best 20 minute power average, even though the ride is longer than 20 minutes.

This is the official text from Garmin Connect - it accurately describes my experience with "Records" - it seems that it follows different rules for you!

    "What is a Personal Record?

Whether you call it a personal record or a personal best, it's a way to measure your milestones.

How does Garmin Connect determine a Personal Record?

Personal Records are created when you upload data that closely matches one of our predetermined distances, and it's the fastest time you've ever uploaded for that distance.

You don't have to exactly match a distance, but it must be close. (For example, a Half Marathon Personal Record may be created if your activity is 13.2 miles.)

Connect only scans for a Personal Record the first time an activity is uploaded, so an edited activity won't be listed as a Personal Record."

When using a device that calculates PRs on the unit, it will take out the fastest 40K section and upload that to Garmin Connect automatically when you sync. If you are manually entering a PR, Garmin Connect will not pick out the the fastest 40K segment for that ride. This is why you are seeing the total time for the whole activity rather than the just the 40K section. You can edit the PR time by clicking the Pencil icon if you know the time for the 40K section.

For users that have a device that does not track PRs on the unit, Garmin Connect assigns PRs when the distance is close to the pre-set PR distance as mickw46 indicated.

Thanks for the reply. So there is no way to have Garmin go back and retroactively analyze a record to pull out the fastest 40k?

Not automatically in Garmin Connect. You can manually assign the PR like you did before.

There is a manual process by which you could delete the activity and manually upload it once more. If you choose to go through the manual process, I would recommend that you find the activity that you know is the record, and export the original FIT file by clicking the Gear/Cog icon in the upper left of the activity detail page.

Save the FIT file to your desktop (as a backup) and then delete the activity from your account.

You can then manually upload the FIT file to Garmin Connect. To manually upload the file:

    • Click "+" icon in top right corner of page
    • Click Upload Your Activities
    • Click Manual Upload tab
    • Follow on-screen instructions by dragging and dropping the FIT file in the box

Once the activity is uploaded you should be able to return to the PR page and confirm the correct PR with the correct time.
  • Thanks. I hadn't considered re-uploading the fit file.
