Using Two Devices With Garmin Connect

I had question about using two separate devices to track activities. I currently use Vivosmart HR and I'm planning on purchasing Fenix 3 HR for workouts and the such. I wear my Vivosmart during my workweek and I plan on wearing the fenix 3 on my days off to track all my workouts, HR and sleep patterns when the Vivo isn't on. I'm curious if the devices will cause problems when the other isn't in use? Has anyone had to use two separate devices at different times using Garmin Connect.

A quick side not: The reason I use two devices instead of just wearing the Fenix 3 full time is I work in Law Enforcement and you really don't want to be wearing a $1000 training watch while on the job.

Thanks
  • What you are hoping to do would be a PITA.

You can only have one primary tracker at a time which you can change at will. That's the good news.
The bad news is you need to make the switch at very beginning of the morning and also make sure you're all synced up before switching. If your fenix sits in a drawer until, say, noon, you could find yourself having lost your sleep stats for the night before and your steps up-to-that point.

Since the VSHR records sleep and 24/7 HR, you should wear it 24/7 and have it as your primary tracker. The VSHR will record sleep, steps, and 24/7 hR. Use the Fenix just for activities but use it for HR during the activity.

    Thanks for the info

I was hoping that during the workweek I'd use the VSHR for my daily stuff and then take it off when I'm done work and switch to the Fenix 3 as my primary tracker on my days off. My biggest concern was the VSHR sending data from the time I take it off till I put it back on and overwriting any data recorded by Fenix 3 on my days off.
  • Same Desire

Where I work prohibits wireless devices from leaving your car. So I'm using an old Forerunner for my lunch time runs. Would like to buy a new device (920XT) for weekends, but if I can't use two devices I don't see any reason to spend the money.

Two devices works fine if you're only logging workouts. I think the above discussion mentioned problem with all-day trackers doing sleep stats, resting calories etc.
  • Presumably, your old Forerunner doesn't track sleep or steps, so tracking won't be an issue. There would be nothing stopping you from using both devices but keep in mind that, if you take off the 920XT, you lose its enhanced features for the time you're not wearing it.

Ya that pretty much is my question, when I take off the VSHR will it still log data to my Garmin connect even though it's not on my wrist when the Fenix HR is?
  • It will stop counting steps obviously so you won't get the credit in your connect account. If the VSHR is your primary tracker, the Fenix HR will only record activity results - No steps - No sleep - No 24/7 HR.

The recommended way to get a complete picture is to wear the VSHR 24/7 and both when using the Fenix.

    Anyway to switch primary devices?
  • Sure - BUT....

You can't switch back and forth multiple times in a day without losing information or steps.

For example, if the Fenix HR is a drawer somewhere and you switch to it at noon, you'll lose steps recorded in VSHR until that point. So say, you have 5,000 steps accumulated by noon, then you switch to the Fenix with 0, and then sync, you will be back to 0 for the day even though the breakdown of steps per hour will still be there.

Incidentally, more than a year ago, Garmin did say they would support changing devices at will but that seems to have been forgotten. However, now that people seem to own multiple devices, this keeps coming up more and more. Maybe it will be resurrected.
  • I would really hope that Garmin would implement this. I own the F3 and VivoSmart. For the most part, I use the F3 as a activity tracker. There are times during some physical activity I do not want to do that because it is too big and more fragile than the VS. In these cases now, I just take the F3 off and lose the steps for that period of time. Not a huge deal but an annoyance. It also kind of annoying that Fitbit has been able to implement this a LONG time ago and a big company like Garmin can't figure out how to do it.
