Active calories not calculating

I've had an issue with the active calories not calculating properly for the last 2 days. Yesterday, I ran (941 calories) and biked (230 calories). These calorie counts show up properly within the individual activity (both app and website), on the watch (920XT), and also on the calorie summary page (website). The total number of active calories burned on the calorie summary page (website and app) is showing as 552. At a minimum, it should be 1171 calories. I also took an additional 10,615 steps and it is showing no calories burned which is very unusual since there is normally a nominal number there. Today, I have the exact same issue. Biked (482 calories) and ran (403 calories) while total calorie burn is 648. No step calories for the additional 9,185 steps I have taken so far.

This is frustrating as I do use Connect with MyFitnessPal so while MFP has the correct activity calories, it is saying I am doing nothing the remainder of the day so no calories are being added onto that. The Garmin app is then WAY off since the active calories are even lower than what MFP is showing.

Has anyone else run into this? Any suggestions? I have an e-mail into Garmin support as well. Thanks in advance for any help/insight!

I just noticed that active calories show the next day. Say yesterday I had 200 active calories,  but today 600.. so the 600 wont show today but today 200 from yesterday will show  . That's just my conclusion but why I still have no idea and would like to find it out too . Hope it could help to anyone.

No solution found. Thought it went away with an update, noticed it is still a problem now.

  • No solution found for what exacty? For the problem described in the first post, in the last post before you, or another one from this thread? There are several totally unrealated problems mentioned here in this thread, each with a different possibilities of solutions, so if you want an advice, you have to specify your problem more precisely.

The total number of active calories burned on the calorie summary page (website and app) is showing as 552. At a minimum, it should be 1171 calories.

This is a very common mistake due to the confusing terminology used by Garmin for active calories vs Activity Calories. While active calories are those calories burned over the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), Activity Calories incude even the BMR calories (those that the body burns anyway even at rest).

It means, when you have for example the BMR of 1800 kCal/day, and burned 941 kCal during two hours of a running activity, and 230 kCal from another hour of a biking activity, those two activities will contribute with 941-2*1800/24 = 791 kCal and 230-1*1800/24 = 155 kCal, together 946 kCal, defintely not 1171 kCal (941+230). The total amount of active calories for given day will then also include some smaller amount of active calories for the rest of the day, for your activity (based on the HR) not logged in any recorded activity.

The fact that GC shows only 552 kCal instead of an amount greater than the calculated 946 kCal, could be caused by an incomplete synchronisation of the HR data. Check the HR and Stress graphs for given day, and if there are any lags, look up "troubleshooting syncronisation" in the FAQ of the Support section

MFP not Syncing properly with Garmin Connect.

Does anyone have a solution for the following... I am entering my food intake in MyFitnessPal (MFP) but it is only sometimes syncing. Now I've got inconsistent data.

I enter my data into MFP through the day and sometimes it syncs straight away. Other times it never syncs at all, or it just syncs some of the data. I can't find a way to redo the sync to fix it.

I have restarted phone. Reconnected the apps. Press syncs on Connect and also sync in Settings on MFP. It appears to be a bug. I've got an iPhone 7 Plus with the latest iOS version.

    TIA.

  • This question is completely off-topic in this thread, since it is not at all about the calculations of active calories. You would do better finding a matching thread or creating a new one. That told, verify if the data from MFP passes to GC Web (click the sync link at Calories there, when it does not). If it does not help, try clearing browser cache and reloading the page. If the problem exist only on the phone app, clear the app cache and restart the app or reboot the phone. If the problem persists, post a question in the GC Mobile iOS forum.
