Where does Garmin Connect get its HR zones from?

I manually set my HR zones in my watch's user settings section to 50-60-70-80-90-100 and Max HR as 180, but the Garmin Connect web page has them as 66-73-80-86-94-100 and Max HR as 185.

I certainly did not create the second set and the Customize Zones switch is greyed out. Why the weird spacing?

Does Garmin use my runs and performance to create a better set?

Should I use Garmin's weird ones?
  • I have set up zones as %HRR (heart rate reserve) that takes into consideration the resting heart rate. The zones is divided as 50-60-70-80-90-100% of HRR. When I compute these zones as % of HRmax I get very much the same percentages that you mention (68-74-81-87-94-100), I can also see the same in Device settings in GC, zones show as "% of Max" with these numbers. Could it be that you have set zones based on %HRR also, instead of %Max HR?
