Custom Activity Tracking and Reporting

I have a few questions about strength training and activity reporting. I have a Forerunner 220 (along with some Smart Scales).

I appreciate there are a lot of posts already about this sort of thing, of which I have tried to read as much as possible, but I've not found an answer to my specific questions. I also understand the Forerunner is for tracking running (which it's great at), and therefore I may just be using the wrong device (I've had the Forerunner 220 for years so am probably due an upgrade!).

Is it possible to switch off the tracking of speed/pace/distance on my watch, so I'm only tracking heartrate, calories and time? Or setup some sort of custom activity/workout that means my watch won't track things I don't want?

At the moment, when lifting weights I just use the watch as normal, then when it syncs to Garmin Connect I change the activity type. That's all fine, but when I look in reports the weight training activies appear in my stats for both 'All Activities' and 'Running', so it messes up my average pace etc. If I go into Progress Summary and filter by activity type, average pace isn't doesn't appear to be an available field to add.

....so alternatively, is there a way to properly filter out weight training activities in reports?

If no to both questions, is there a Garmin device I should be using to track both Running and Weight Training properly? There seems to be lots of other posts about strength training apps for IQ compatible devices, will the Fenix 3 do what I need? Am I able to create custom activities where only certain sensors/metrics are tracked? I've read there are problems recently with Fitness Activities syncing to reports though as well!

It feels like all the requisite bits are there to do what I want, but I can't seem to get them all working together! Thanks in advance for any help, it's really appreciated.
