Forerunner 305 Issue

Hi,

I know it is a bit old now, but I was given a 305 by my Brother, as he was bought a new device for Christmas. I am doing some regular cycling mainly for fitness, and am using the 305 to take note of a complete circuit, i.e. out and back, starting the timer at the beginning, and stopping it when I get back. Most of the time it is fine, but a few times now, I have sync'd it with the PC, and the Activity is displayed incorrectly in Connect -

  • The total time of the session is over 3 hours on top of the actual time.
  • The first split is the correct session time, distance, ave & max speed
  • One of the splits is an extra 0.18 miles that shouldn't be there
  • One of the splits logs a maximum speed of 23.7 mph

I should state that my brother used it for running, and lives over 200 miles away from me. I did not do a complete reset on receiving it, and only reset the satellites. However I did this by leaving it by a Window, and not going outside. It appeared to complete the procedure, but before I start a course, it sometimes takes some time to find the satellites. I understand that when you turn on the device, you need to stand still to find the satellites, but when you have to reset in a totally new location, as I have done, do you need to stand still to get a fix on the satellites when resetting ?

If I have to do a complete reset, will the data loaded in Connect remain ?

TIA
  • Are you sure you stopped the activity that ran over by 3 hours? I have made the mistake once or twice where I just closed the watch without actually stopping the activity. If you reset it completely, the data in Connect will remain so no need to worry about that.

Did you change the default activity to cycling?

    Thanks for the reply.

I did indeed stop the activity, it was showing the correct elapsed time on the Device. I have also set the default activity to Cycling. I shall perhaps do a complete reset then, I suspect I probably didn't do things properly when I reset the satellites, seems strange it should always add the specific speed (23.7Mph) as the fastest speed, and a specific 0.18 miles add as a split.

Just in case anyone should have any similar problems with a used Garmin device, simple answer - Reset it !

I have in fact noticed a couple of features that weren't present before -

Activities that have just been uploaded to Connect. will have a title made up with the Place name, and the Activity, e.g. Cycling in my case, and the title was blank.
Before, I just had all the numerical data displayed in an activity, now it displays a course map, and both a speed and elevation graph.

.. so everything is working fine. The only issue is sometimes locating the Satellites can be slow - The last 10% or so will take a while, and then just as it gets to the end, it jumps back 10-15%. I reset the Satellite data as per instructions, both after resetting, and again just to be sure. I tested it a couple of feet away from where I left it, and they were found very quickly, but not since, and in each case, I have been - at most - about 50 Feet away from where it was reset, and away from my block of flats. Not a major issue though, I just have to hang around for a minute or two before I set off.
