Garmin Connect to analyse activities data, really?

Hi,

I am new at Garmin, coming from Polar having owned a RS800CX for many years. Now I switched to Fenix 3 and, up to now, I am very satisfied with the watch. But the surprise to me is how poorly executed is Garmin Connect when it comes to analyse data. The synchronization is seamless, perfect so far. But the new dashboard (as the old version) is pretty useless to analyse in some detail the multiple data captured by the watch.

What do you guys do? Is there any expected upgrade that allows the application be on par with some others in the market? I was just checking the trial version of SportTracks... any opinion on this software?

Thanks!

Thanks Phil for the heads up. Good to see some improvements although I think they go not in the direction I was refering to. For example, it is pretty useless to have a graphic that you can not resize its Y axis, for example. You may have a graph showing pace, or elevation. Variations on both variables are graphically unnoticed unless you have extreme values, which, in general you may not have.

Is it unreasonable to ask for these simple data analysis tools. This does not seem to come with Garmin insights...

    Will see!

I'll be very surprised if it's of any use.

Re the original post: you correctly state that dashboard is not much use for in-depth analysis of data but I didn't think that was its purpose anyway.
Have you looked at the graphs of data for an individual activity and zoomed in on the parts of interest? This lets you see variations on a different y-axis an hence aids analysis.
Also, careful use of "Reports" can monitor changes over time.
Not perfect, I would agree, but potentially far more useful than just using dashboard which is only a highly selective summary of your data.
  • A lot of it's really broken @AMmickw46 . Even if it's not that in-depth, you can't view HR by zones or % of max anymore, pace is stepped to the point of being useless, having 0 distance in a period used to delete your graphs for that period entirely and now all activities appear as the watch default activity in reports. And that's just a couple of the problems I've personally had.

I hear some people can't even get it to stick to KM properly. Forget in-depth, when can it report my data?

I don't think that I implied that GC was perfect!
I was merely pointing out to the OP that he/she could see a bit more analysis than that available in the Dashboard by focussing on some of the things GC can do, rather than simply being negative about it to a new user.

It can be done. When I first got an Edge 305 in 2007, the software platform was called MotionBased. I don't think it was owned by Garmin. About a year later they moved to Garmin Express. MotionBased was far superior to anything Garmin has had since.

Not having a go at you mate. And if anyone from Garmin's reading this: I'm not angry, I'm just very, very disappointed.

Disappointing is a very accurate description of Garmin Connect - it has the potential to offer so much but just doesn't quite make it happen.
