Ability to create courses on Garmin Connect

I can't believe the only way to create courses, to use as guidance on an Edge, is to import the .gpx file as a manual activity and then create the course starting from there.
This is wrong in so many ways: primarily because doing this messes up all my stats as I'm importing a stranger's activity.

What is so difficult in adding an "upload course" button in the course creation section? Looks like I'm stuck with using Basecamp...

    A couple of points:

    1. Importing an activity and converting to a course is not the only way of creating a course - you can generate the course from scratch in Garmin Connect.

    2. The importing of someone else's activity won't upset your stats if you delete it once you have produced a course from it.

However, I do agree that an "Import" button on the "Create Course" page would be a simple solution.

can't upload gpx file to Garmin connect

Hi, I want to upload gpx file / course to Garmin Connect.

The way I do it does not work:
Garmin Connect -> Activity -> Import -> choosing gpx file from my drive -> a result is the following error: "An error occurred with your upload. Please try again." and "We currently support .tcx .gpx and .fit files."

I tried to upload .gpx and. tcx files from different sources, however the result was the same.

Im trying to do the import from my Mac and then sending the course to my Fenix 3.

Any idea what the issue is, or do you have some alternative way to add a new course to my Fenix 3?

    Thanks in Advance

Darko - I have had success using the method you describe with .gpx on a Mac so I'm not sure what is causing your problem. I can only assume that it is the source of your files that is the issue but I don't know why. Can you download one of your own activities in .gpx and then reimport it to Garmin Connect? If you can, it will show that it is a file problem not a system problem.

Welcome to my nightmare. The course creation through connect to the Fenix 3 is completely insane. The problem you are having is because the XML generated in the GPX file is probably missing timestamps. Garmin Connect rejects uploads without timestamps because it assumes every upload is an activity. And an activity without timestamps isn't very usefull... unless you're trying to make a course with it. GET IT TOGETHER GARMIN! add an "upload course" function to the course planning page that will accept timestampless GPX files!
  • Course management hopeless

I Couldn't agree more. We need a import/export function for several reasons:

1: Transferring a GPX and creating a Course from it, does not allow for cuecard information to be transferred (needed for proper basic Turn by Turn navigation on "non" Edge 800 and 1000 series devices)

2: Creating courses manually in Garmin Connect is less than stellar feature wise, and again, you have no control and generation of cuecards.

3: In lack af features from Garmin, most of us creates routes using other tools (RideWithGPS, BikeRouteToaster and so forth), and while we can get them on our devices using the /newfiles directory on the device ourselves, we can't see them in connect, and can't transfer them wirelessly on demand from connect.

Come on Garmin, this is actually pretty embarassing - it's been like this for years. Your hardware is great (after a few Firmware releases), but the software sourrunding the hardware is not exactly top notch.

You need to watch out for Wahoo. Their upcoming GPS computers are going to eat markedshares because they make very open and interoperable software with focus on customer needs.

    Just my two cents..

I create a coiurse in Connect and send it to my device(Edge 510) and when i try to open it on my Edge i get an 'invalid course' message. Garmin support have so far failed to help me other than upload the latest software or perform reset (DOH!!!) They fail to read that I have done that and still have a problem - why are they so rubbish at solving a problem that they have on their expensive kit?

I wish I had not bought the Edge 510 or anything with Garmin emblazoned on it - expensive rubbish and still no solution - look at how many questions exist on the forum for product / software issues!
