Time in Heart Rate Zones

Anyone know how to view time spent in each heart rate zone during a workout? If it isn't available, Garmin should add this feature into the next Garmin Connect update.

Garmin has already added this feature to Garmin Connect. It's right there in the "Time in Zones" tab at the bottom of the activity page.

It seems to be available to some users but the feature is not yet available to me - possibly a phased rollout?

I can see that option too, but when I click on that, there is no graph, just 2 values, that doesnt say me anything 3.8 AVG HR and 4,9 MAX HR .. When imprort file in other service, I can see correct graph with zones. Feature might be supported only with some Garmin devices, I use Polar ...?

It may be device dependent as I have a Forerunner 235 and can see the 'Time in Zones' tab in my activities next to Stats, Splits and Segments. The rest of my family (Forerunner 15, 25 and Vivoactive) don't have the 'Time in Zones' tab available.

    Not seeing "time in zone"

I have a Garmin 910. I could always see time in zone in the previous Garmin Connect. Haven't been able to since they released the beta version, and I'm still not seeing it now. It's super annoying not to be able to see it, since the data is clearly being collected and tracked - and it was displayed previously. REALLY annoying.

  • News flash: Garmin is only putting it on connect modern for activities done on a device that has it available to display on the device itself so that they can sell the latest piece of (admittedly nice hardware) buggy, broken, rushed device with software so bad the chances are it can't reliably display the statistic on the device itself anyway.

My guess is that Garmin executive level has decided the best way to increase revenue is to piss off their current user base.

Why don't you say what you really think?
  • Why don't you say what you really think?

Probably wouldn't be fit to print? I can if you like...

I don't hear any arguments against my statement, but I'm open to different points of view. Any reason why you would think that Garmin can't display this information on their own website for their own hardware (unless it displays it on the device itself) when strava can do it for someone else's hardware regardless of the display features of that device?
Hell, I can get the training scores from a FR620 from my FR210 if I want, all I have to do is sign up to trainingpeaks. But that doesn't sell new buggy devices, does it?
  • Please reconsider

Clearly the data needed to compile time in each zone is available for activities tracked with older devices because other apps like Strava and Training Peaks that pull data from Garmin Connect provides this reporting. If it is true Garmin is only offering this feature for those with devices that calculate the same information within the device, this is disappointing. Garmin would earn my loyalty as a customer when it comes time for me to buy my next device if this was something that got enabled en-mass in Connect.

My FR630 has a new data-field (that the FR620 doesn't have) for each lap and in the full session section. Here's the first lap of an easy run in a .csv version of the activity .fit file:

    time_in_hr_zone,"0.0|14.55|125.159|305.0|0.0|0.0|0.0",s

Quite nice, because then my own analyzing linux script can do a quick and painless conversion to a text file with the line:

    Minutes in HR Zone: [1> 0:15 [2> 2:05 [3> 5:05

With the FR620 all I have is the actual heart rate for each second, eg timestamp,"823614124",s [...] heart_rate,"143",bpm. Could I from that write routines to compute time in zones? Sure, easily - but perhaps a bit cumbersome in the bash scripting language ;-)

Will I? Heck no! It is a matter of interest and time expenditure. There is a plethora of stand-alone or online software that has done the job already. For a quick fix I use MyTourbook (local, on MY computer).

Should Garmin spend the time and resources to implement an universal 'Time In Zone'-view? Well, that's not my call to make. All a user can do is suggest, and then perhaps vote with their feet...
