I think the first thing to do is to fix your java error.
However, we have all been having this issue for some time now.There are multiple threads about not being able to change activity types. The best workaround is to change the activity type, export it; delete it; and reimport it.
However, if you're getting a java error you probably need to fix that first - probably with a java update.

I am using Firefox on my MAC and firefox is upto date error starting from 18 of dec and occurs with any new update to an activity
It's interesting that changing activity type is possible when you change it to value from the same group. Running -> Street running.
But it's not possible to change it to value from another group.
I expect that Garmin fix the bug @Garmin Connect in the nearest time. It's both in new and old version of the web-site. No workarounds to substitute vendor's bugs!
