Adding distance to FIT file

Hello,

I am looking for assistance to add total distance to the attached FIT file and guidance on how to do it myself in the future.

The file was created while training indoor on my Tacx trainer. The file contents training data in HR, Power and cadence but not speed and distance. This is because I rely on GPS to measure speed/distance when riding outdoors.

When riding indoor my average speed is approx. 30 km/h. So for the attached file (a 1,5h workout) I would like to add the distance of 45 km. I can of course do so after uploading to Garmin Connect. But the added distance will not be considered in the statistics and Leaderboards. This is why I am looking to modify the file before uploading to Garmin Connect. Thanks in advance for any help and advice on this.

Cheers,
Morten

Note 1: I am running a demo version of Fit File Repair Tool (my license expired last year) and there seems to be a function which allows for adding distance to the FIT file. I just can't get it to work. Maybe because it's a demo version(?)

Note 2: Garmin support's level of assistance is limited to advising me to mount a cadence/speed sensor. This is somehow quite difficult due to crank length and bike geometry. I'd prefer not to go down that path.

    Hello Morten,

This is much more work than its worth. Some type of speed and distance sensor is definitely needed.

Your license does not expire. The ability to get new updates expires. You have a fully functioning version but not the latest update.

Your file has 7 laps with power and time for each. Using this website http://bikecalculator.com/ I entered the power and the time and it calc'd the distance and calories. The 7 distances added up to 49kms so I reduced each lap by approx 8% to make 45kms.

The only way to change the distance when there are no coordinates is to change the "Distance" column using MS Excel.
Import your file into the FFRT > Data Analysis Tab > click button "Analyse with MS Excel" > you get a huge spread sheet stored in the same folder as the FFRT program > remember the file name.

Unless you want to hand enter 5718 distances you need to write some simple formulas for each lap.
Be careful to go way off to the right past all the headers to make formulas. Do not change any headers, spacing, columns, rows, nothing. You can only change data.

The "Distance" column is a running total.
For each lap I divided the distance by the number of points in that lap to get a constant then wrote a formula that added that number over and over and then made sure that the total distance was correct at the end of each lap. The result after 7 formulas is a column with 5718 numbers ending at 45kms.

Then I copied that entire column over into the "Distance" column using "Paste Special" "Values Only" because there cannot be any formulas, only numbers in the data columns. Then all the work I did off to the side must be deleted and click "Save".

Then back to the FFRT > Data Analysis Tab > click button "Reimport from MS Excel" > look at the bottom of the screen for the Installation Folder to see where your Excel file is > Browse to the file > make sure the Units match > check the "Distance" box > click OK. If your Excel file is done correctly it will slowly load.

When its done loading click the "Sessions and Laps" tab. Add in the new calories from the website for each lap. Click button "Recalculate Max/Avg Values". Up top in "Session 1" make note of the total calories. Click the "Devices, File Info" tab. Correct the Calories box to match the "Session 1" calories. Click "Export file" and you are done.

So....here ya go. Fixed with manufactured distances.
  • Hi,

Thanks for your help and the provided information. It is indeed much more complicated to add the distance info to the FIT file than I expected.

I agree with it will be much easier just to mount the speed sensor on the bike.

    Cheers,
    Morten

Note: I updated my FitFileRepairTool to version 7.0.10 (latest). This was not a problem. But now it is only running as "demo version" because the license expired 06/14.

    Hello Morton,

Of course you know that older versions may have some missing functions and/or glitches, but....

Here is an older version of the FFRT that should run with your June 2014 license.
Let me know if it works.
