Max Heart Rate

Hi folks, i've set my max heart rate at 187 as thats been my max heart rate over the last six months. Now, i've just started with the garmin 225 and the last couple of times i've been out i've noticed that i've reached my max but not gone beyond it even though i was pushing hard. Is this some sort of safety feature and if so how do i measure my new max heart rate as i continue to train if the device won't record above the pre set max?

    I would think it would record what your max is regardless of what you set it at. If it doesn't its not a safety feature as it won't stop you from exceeding the number simply by not recording it. Set it at 200 and see what happens. Maybe 187 really is your max even tho you feel like you're progressively working harder.
  • If 187 has been your maximum achievable HR.... that is your maximum....

    precieved effort can be very different day to day... as can HR. But your maximum beats per minute will not change.

    If your prior 187 wasn't during an attempted HR max self-test or at the end of a 5k or 10k Race with a very hard finish...

    But in short, your Max is your Max you can push harder and harder, but the lil'pumper can only do so much (eventually leading to oxygen depletion in muscles/body, making you slow down). Maximum HR isn't really a trainable attribute, whereas minimum/resting HR does slowly lower as your get more fit (or your HR at any given pace).
