Garmin "Modern" view - can't stand it!

Man, What do you guys think about eh new Garmin "Modern" site?

I Hate it! What did they think they had to change it?????

Please Garmin, keep the Classic view for some of us.

  • We humans are creatures of habit. We object to change. When MS replaced Office 95 I thought it was awful. Now I can't even remember what it was like.

After a few weeks of using Modern you'll find it far better than Classic.
  • We are creatures of habit - agreed. But to make a blanket statement saying that you'll like it better than classic when you get used to it without knowing what exactly the poster doesn't like is just as bad as the poster's generalisation.

I have used modern for a while now - as effectively forced to by Garmin and whilst there are a number of nice features I suspect what irritates some people is the rush to put in lots of "fluffy" features addressing the social media side of connect whilst not devoting much effort on adding more useful sports analysis features such as you see in something like the firstbeat software or even maintain the functionality of reporting available in Classic which whilst it was not great was more useful than the graphic displays in modern.

We also see a number of menu options which obviously (I assume) function with some devices (such as Floors climbed) but for me display some half complete step data.

In addition quite simple things like the fact that the connect website displays poorly on a number of mobile devices in the modern version whereas the classic version displays much better.

It come back really to how a large company like Garmin decides to focus its output and I expect that the route they have gone will overall yield better profits for them but will inevitably not cater to the needs of some of their more specialist markets.

when i started with garmin, i started with the modern view.
one of my friends asked me how i can stand it and that i should use the classical version.
so i switched to the classical thingy for a few minutes.

and i have to say, i really prefer the modern one. everything looks more beautiful, stuff is easy to find, i have it all on one screen etc.
if you are new to all this stuff, it is really easy to learn and get into it.

while in the classical version everything looked so small, i had to search ages before i found what i'm looking for etc. i had really trouble figuring it all out.

with all those new activity trackers and the people that are using them (of whom the majority (including me) is not as tech savy as the forerunner geek) it imo was a good decision to develop this modern version, so that these people get a more basic, easy to understand, simplistic thingy to gather all their data. and not that huge intimidating tech monster that the classic version was.

i however can relate to my friends when they say that the modern version lacks features the classic version had and even if i personally don't use those, i can understand why this might be frustrating.
Anyways, if garmin already had those features in the old version, i'm sure they will make it in the new version soon-ish too.
  • I agree entirely with hypurr. While classic may do some things better than modern for some people, I much prefer modern, the flexibility it provides, not to mention the information it displays that is nowhere to be found in classic.

That being said, there is some functionality in Classic that has not been brought over to Modern and Classic is about to be retired in about 4 weeks. For example, I have never been able to manually import a tcx file into modern (although I haven't tried lately) and it works very well for me in classic.

... I have never been able to manually import a tcx file into modern

It's available under Import in the Activities widget.
  • Yes, I know.

However, when i tried it, modern gave me some sort of restricted access error message. That never happens in classic. Someone said that Express had to be open for it to work in Modern, I tried it and it still didn't work but that was then. It could be different now so I'll try it again today just to see what happens.
  • I tried importing from modern and it worked fine. As a matter of fact it's a bit more direct than in classic in that classic makes you jump a few hoops before you can import.
  • SUSSAMB,

I posted above that I tried to import an activity into modern and it worked.

Yesterday, I had to export an activity to re-import it in order to fix my activity report. It's actually the export in Modern that doesn't work for me. I had a tip that it should work if I have Express open while doing the export. I did that but it didn't make a difference.

It's not a problem for me today but it will be when Classic disappears.

  • Strange, I've just confirmed by trying to export some of my activities, both as gpx and tcx files, and also exporting to Google earth, that it works perfectly, and that's without Express open.
  • I tried it in IE and it worked. My issue seems to only be in Chrome.
