Step Goal Reset

Former Member
Former Member
I noticed some thing strange last Tuesday. My daily step goal was 15,439 then the following Wednesday it dropped precipitously to 7,500. It almost seems like GC performed an "auto-reset" because 7,500 is an oddly round number and my daily average to date is 19,732.

Has anyone noticed the same phenomenon? Does anyone know how to change the goal back to reflect prior steps and goal achievement?

Kinda strange.

I have only had my 235 for a few days and this is what I figured out so far. The total steps goal seems to be based on a moving average of some sort. If you go to Garmin Connect, click on the word Connect in the upper left corner of the screen, and then click on your watch model, you will see User Settings as a choice. Scroll down under Goals, and you can either choose Use Auto Goal or you can type in your own goal.

This is great, except that I want to have a walking-only daily goal. I run such a variable amount each day (some days, 5 miles recovery, others, 18 mile long run) that I don't want my running steps to be counted toward my total. I read that it's so bad for you to have a sedentary lifestyle even if you run a lot. I need to be pushed to walk. Hopefully others want this too and it can be made into an option. Hope this helps!
  • I presume your history in Connect is still there. 7500 is the first goal when you start. That is odd. What I suggest you do is set a manual goal, sync, and then put it back to auto-goal. If that doesn't work, try leaving the manual goal for a day or 2.

Hi, yes, I see all that. What I don't understand the precipitous decline set by the auto-goal. It's like Garmin sent me back to square 1.

Yes, correct, all of my history is in GC.

    OK, I'll try both. Thanks.

    And this didn't work either.
  • You could use a manual goal until Connect catches up.
  • Actually, "auto goal" is generated by the watch itself, and not Garmin Connect. The watch sends it to GC for display.

If you hard reset a watch, it resets the auto goal to the default. Sounds like something caused a hard reset on the OP's watch.

The way to increase the auto goal is to keep it on auto goal, and just pass your goal for a few days. That's why your auto goal changes on the watch at midnight without syncing to to GC - because it's based on the history on your watch.
