Heart rate monitor and vivosmart - help!

I have a vivosmart which I have had for a few months. For my birthday I got a heart rate monitor. The garmin one with the soft strap. How on earth do I pair them? I've tried wearing the monitor to see if magically connects(!) and logged into the app on the phone and also garmin express or whatever it's called on PC. No joy at all.

What do I do! Please start from the beginning! I can't see any inclination on the vs that would allow me to connect?

The second thing is to go to the device settings and put a checkmark to display heart rate. Had you bought the HRM bundle it would have been turned on by default. Without the bundle, you have to turn on Heart rate to see it on your vs. Once you see it, your heart rate should show up in a few seconds. Also, once you're set to display heart rate in settings, choosing the activity icon will start by displaying your heart rate.
