eTrex 30 does not power up on battery, but does with cable

My eTrex 30 (Firmware version 4.3) abruptly stopped to start up when powered with the two battery. It however works fine when it is powered by over the USB cable...

I already tried the following:

Recharge the NiMH battries and tested it with another device (the batteries are fine
Mount two new AA alcaline batteries
Removed the micro SD card
Delete all installed map, tracks, POI etc...
Factory reset of the device

The device is not 2 years old and worked fine until now... Is this known to someone?
