Any 3rd Shift/Overnight workers out there?

Curious if anyone else works the overnight shift and what they have their sleep schedule set to. I currently have it set for my working sleep schedule but on my days off it will only record any sleep before midnight, so my sleep average is a lot lower than I think it should be. Is the only way to compensate for alternating sleep schedules is to manually active sleep mode or change it within the settings every time I need to do so?

I'm a shift worker (2 x 12 hour days, 2 x 12 hour nights) and I've given up trying to set anything up as it was just too much bother.

Bummer you didn't get an answer. I'm in the same situation 4x10 hr shifts overnight. Then back to normal schedule. Please post if you figure it out
  • Sorry to bump this thread.

Garmin should allow user to enter the sleep schedule for the benefit of rotating workers.

  • Steady graveyards, here, with weekend sleeping times all over the map.  Using a Vivoactive 4.  I leave mine set to the workday sleep pattern, and ignore the fact that the average is skewed low as a result.  I've tried adjusting the sleep/wake times for weekend sleeping (just before I go for a sleep), but it seems that it fails to recognize ANY sleep on the day I change the times - so that's an even worse result.

I've just found that I can edit the times after the fact, on the iphone app (today's sleep report on the "my day" screen, go in and hit the top-right three dots to get to the 'edit' screen).  I did some experimenting:  added sleep on a day it had recorded nothing (the graph showed it all as "light sleep"), and adjusted two other sleeps to a wider span - for one, the graph showed it as "awake" (valid, based on heart rate/movement graph), and for the other it showed "light sleep" again - also valid, based on HR/movement.  I don't know if this method would ever give you deep or REM sleep info on the graph, but it's maybe better than nothing.

  • I'm a shift worker, alternating between AM, PM and overnight shifts of 10hrs. It would seem sensible to me to allow a larger number of sleep patterns to be setup, perhaps thus eliminating this annoying problem.

  • My sleeping time is flucutaing a lot, and the watch (Garmin Instinct) has no problem detecting it, whenever I sleep. Perhaps you could try widening the pre-defined sleep time in device settings. Try setting it from 0:00 to 23:59, or from 12:00 to 11:59, perhpas it will then work better for you too,

  • Thanks for the suggestion, I had considered trying 00:00 as Normal Wake Time to 23:59 as Normal Bed Time too but wasn't sure if it would have the intended result. Shall give it a go and report back.

  • I had considered trying 00:00 as Normal Wake Time to 23:59 as Normal Bed

Not a good idea, I would do it exactly oppositely. If you go to bed at 23:59 and wake up at 00:00, you have slept just a single minute. You better set the bed time to 00:00 and the wake time at 23:59 - like that all the day would be monitored for sleeping.

  • Touché and well spotted!
