Creating course with varying pace

I would like to create a course with pace that varies along the route, as I might get if I created a course from a previous activity. The reason is to be able to use "virtual racer" to run the course according to a pre-chosen pace plan. I could do this by just carefully running the course, then create course from that first activity, but I don't want to do it that way, too tedious. Any ideas?

Before somebody suggests creating a workout that does the right pace changes: the problem with that is the device (a 910XT in this case) doesn't keep track of ahead or behind accumulated pace. I want the virtual racer feature so I can slow or speed up to get back on pace if I'm off.
