Personal Records for short distances within longer runs

Hello, I am having issues with the Personal Records feature in Garmin Connect. Let's say I did a 4.1-mile run, with the first mile being a slow warm-up, and the next 3.1 being at a faster race pace. In the past, Garmin would notify me if my 5k was a new Personal Record, and it would load the 5k time properly. For example, if I ran for 27 minutes, but within that run I did a fast 5k of 19:00, Garmin Connect would suggest a new 5k PR of 19:00.

This recently has changed. I recently ran 13.4 miles in a time of 1:30:50, which is personal record pace for me. However, instead of calculating my half-marathon (13.1 mile) time, Garmin suggested a new PR of 1:30:50 for the half marathon. Clearly, if I ran 13.4 miles in 1:30:50, my time at the 13.1 mile point was something less than that.

I emailed Garmin support on this issue and was told that I would need to stop running and save the workout at 13.1 miles in order for Garmin Connect to calculate my true half marathon time. Is anyone else having this issue? When did this occur?

Here is the email I received from Garmin:
"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I'll be happy to assist. Garmin Connect will show you the time for the activity. It will not isolate the time that you hit a personal record. If you want the time for the personal record to match when you hit that marker, you'll need to stop the watch right at 13.1 miles."

TL/DR: It seems that Garmin is no longer supporting PRs for shorter distances within longer runs. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
  • I may be wrong but I do not recall GC to set PR's within longer runs even in the old GC. Overall, PR section of GC is not very useful, some activites just do not appear there for some reason, like an activity must be complete to be compared iwth PR's etc. Try syncing GC to Strava, which measures best time and pace on a variety of fixed distances (1 km, 1 mile, etc.) with any activity that you upload. Otherwise, I do not think it will appear on GC itself.
  • Thanks esidore, I appreciate the input. Perhaps it depends on software version, device, or other factors, but this functionality definitely existed at one point.

A few months back, I had to reset my Garmin, clearing all my prior activities on the device. After my first run (~7 miles), Garmin told me I had a new PR in the 1-mile, 5k, and 10k, all within the same run. All the times were logical and seemed accurately calculated for their respective distances within my longer run. Even today, my 5k and 10k personal records occurred within the same activity, and both were automatically calculated and suggested by Garmin. Am I the only one who is experiencing this? Any other perspectives would be appreciated. Thanks!
