[Running activity] Display speed instead of pace information

Former Member

This post is about running activies in Garmin Connect.

When displaying a running activity Garmin Connect always uses pace. Here in Europe (and maybe in the US as well) runners are using speed (kilometre per hour or miles per hour) instead of pace.

Today I tried the new Android Garmin Connect app. And unfortunately the same problem: running activies are displayed with pace information and NO speed information (on the main and splits pages!)

I short the Garmin Connect request is this: give us (the option of) speed information (km/h or miles/h) with regards to running activities (bike activities already have this!) on the main and splits/laps pages! Everybody can relate to speed, especially amateur athletes who are not training on a track etc.

  • For Garmin Connect under "Stats" then Timing you have the option to select pace or speed?

In the APP I see both Pace and Speed?

Not sure what problem you're having unless you're referring to speed missing within the lap / split information!

I'm British living in Germany and no one uses Speed for training! - Speed is not accurate like pace hence why it shouldn't be used for training.

On Garmin Connect and in the Android app the focus is on pace. And indeed the laps / split pages only use pace. I want the option to use speed instead of pace on the splits and on the main screen. This is in a nutshell my request:

Please add the option to have speed (km/h or miles/h) as default information for running activities (instead of pace).

This is a fallacy. The definition of speed is distance covered (length in meters) per duration of the interval (time in seconds). Pace is the inverse of this (time divided by distance). So if speed would not be accurate (the outcome of distance / time) than it follows that pace also is inaccurate (outcome of time / distance) and vice versa. Their accuracy is the same because they both use exactly the same measurement units (meters and seconds).

Futher more: It's about having the choice. Speed (km/h) as default running information option instead of pace. For the people who do want to use it. Presented as an option.

Average speed - pace is irrelevant for paddlers

Here's another request for speed (mph) as an option. I paddle a kayak and use my Forerunner for training. Space means zip. It's all about MPH and time.

Which Forerunner model? On the FR235, the user can specify:
    • his or her preferences for pace or speed – in Menu»Settings»System»Format»Pace/Speed_Preference – separately for Running, Cycling and Other activities; and
    • the unit for distance in pace/speed calculations – in Menu»Settings»System»Units»Pace/Speed

In Garmin Connect online, the default for displaying activity details recorded as Other using the FR235 is speed, but there is the option to switch the speed chart and summary values (but not in Splits) to pace when reviewing an activity. If you manually change the activity type to Whitewater Kayaking/Rafting, the default is also speed.

(To see pace values in Splits, you need to manually – if temporarily and reversibly – change the activity type to Running.)

It is nice to be able to change the mesurement to speed, I am bored with pace.

I'm using the Garmin Connect iPhone app. How can I view my speed instead of pace when reviewing an activity? This is possible when connecting to Garmin Connect through the browser, but I can't find the relevant option in the app.

Not sure about the iOS app, but on the Android app you can tap on the second tab (a document symbol) on the respective Activity page, and you get a screen with both pace and speed values.

Thanks trux, what I had in mind was a graph showing my speed over the duration of the run. It used to be possible to see that in an older version, but this option appears to be gone now (and only a graph showing pace is available in the app).

  • In that case, to see the speed graphs instead of pace, you'd need to switch temprorailty the activty type to cycling instead of running. Pace is the standard at running, and you cannot adjust it in other way.
