HR not being showed on workout

Hi, I'm currently using a Vivosmart with Garmin Connect Mobile App in iOS 8.1. Yesterday I made some aerobic workouts, using a Mio Velo as HR Monitor connected to my Vivosmart, and using Vivosmart as activity tracker.

When I synchronized yesterday Vivosmart with Garmin Connect Mobile App, and I set this activity as "Aerobic activity" in Garmin Connect, the HR graphic was hidden. But, if I set this activity as "Running", the HR graph appears.

I have checked Garmin Connect web portal and HR graph is showed even if I set the activity as "Aerobic activity" or "Running", so I think the problem is in Garmin Connect Mobile App.

Is it a bug?

Below some screenshots of the same activity, in Garmin Connect web and Garmin Connect App (and HR graph not being showed in app):

The supported activity types for the vivosmart are running or walking. You may choose another activity type when saving but once you do so the HR graph will not be present.
  • But HR data is present in GC app because if I choose "running" (or "cycling"!) as type activity the graph is shown. And if I choose "aerobic", in the same activity record, the graph is hidden. Showing the HR graph, whatever the activity is, could be considered as an enhancement to future GC app versions?

    Many thanks. Regards.

I am an new Vivosmart user and would like to pair an HRM with it. Would you suggest that as a good buy? Does it work well with cycling, running, swimming? I was leaning toward a Mio Link but I wanted to know what you found useful from the Mio Velo.
  • Any HRM with ANT+ should work for running and cycling. Swimming will be more of a problem however the arm based HRMs seem to work (more or less). Chest straps generally don't work for swimming.

I have Scosche Rhythm Plus (not the Rhythm) which is Mio's direct competition. I bought that model because I preferred the way I could wear it vs. the Mio. I had some initial issues with it because I didn't realize that you have to keep the LED lenses clean by washing the unit after every use. I imagine the same must apply to the Mio. Apparently Mio and Scosche are the only 2 brands you can really trust for an accurate not-on-the-chest HRM.

The Rhythm Plus was also slightly cheaper.

Thanks Phil. I was also looking at the Scosche products too. I think I am less likely to get a Scosche because it seems that for swimming (if not other activities too) a wrist HRM is needed so it can be within a close range of the vivosmart for real time transmission. Still wondering if I should go for the Mio Link of the Mio Velo. The price difference was a definite plus for the Scosche.

Update: Hi Phil. I saw your post on another thread called Vivosmart and Scosche. I didn't realize that I could use a scosche around my wrist. Most of their advertising has it on the upper arm around the elbow pulse. If the scosche works well on the wrist then it could very well be a contender.
  • Yoyova,

FYI, the Scosche does come with a long and a short band so it can be worn just above the wrist like the Mio. I am already wearing my vivosmart and a Polar watch on my wrist so I prefer something higher up the arm.

I don't use it in the recommended spot but, after 2 days of playing with it, now I've learned how to interact with it properly and it works great. My personal opinion is that either should be fine if you want it near your wrist. My understanding is that the Mio Fuse is better than the Link but that's a whole other story.
  • Hi Yoyova,

I read a lot before buying my Mio Velo. And what I learned about differences between Velo and Link is simple: same HR measuring technology, different purposes. I mean, if we talk about HR technology, algorithms, quality and behavior, Mio Velo and Mio Link are exactly the same. But Mio Link is just a HR monitor, no more, while with Mio Velo you can pair some ANT+ cycling gadgets and use them with a phone cycling app (Strava, Endomondo, Runtastic, etc).

I had two-dubitative-days before buying my Velo where I wasn't able to choose what to buy, Link or Velo. I choosed Velo because of a simple reason: I like cycling, and in a near future I would like to buy a bike, download a good cycling mobile app, and start cycling in a seriously way. And I think Velo will help more than Link with the cycling gadgets. But If you are not interested in cycling, a Mio Link is more than enough. And Mio Link yellow is soooooo pretty cool!!

I don't know the Scosche products, so I can't say what is better (Mio or Scosche). I can tell you I use my Velo when I play basketball (in a team, so in a intense way, not alone in my garage) and when I hit my punching bag. And yes, I am suffering some tipe of out-of-range when I am doing some sport. If I take a look at my HR graph, there are some little points where HR is 0. The first time I saw it I was very disappointed with the Velo, but after reading a lot, it looks like it is a Vivosmart problem, not Velo, so I think if you use Scosche you will get the same (does anyone can confirm it?). What I read is that Velo works really fine with any running watch, but Vivosmart is the only one wearable with this out-of-range problem. So I hope that Vivosmart sensibility will be improved in the next upgrade versions. But thinking in possitive, this out-of-range issue is not as annoying as it seems, it doesn't affect in the graph draw. And Velo is confortable, light, slim and I can use it when playing basketball without hurting my teammates.

Talking about swimming, I will try it, but I think I will go to the pool when sunny days comes :)

I'm attaching my last HR graphs (in the picture, the red graphs); the ones with a running-guy icon were made while basketball, and the ones with a weight icon where made while hitting my punching bag. You will see some little out-of-range problems I talked before. People say the best solution is to wear the Mio and the VivoSmart in the same arm, but I feel it so uncomfortable when I play basketball.

P.S: the problem in Garmin Connect I described in the first post was fixed with the last GC update.

    Regards,
    Carlos.
