Viewing Maps with Vivosmart

Is it possible to view the map of your run/walk on the Garmin Connect app with the Vivosmart? I am having trouble figuring out how to do this. Thanks!
  • No, of course not. Vivosmart doesn't have GPS, so it and Garmin Connect have no idea where you've been.

Garmin connect and iPhone GPS for map

I would be great to map the walk or run with the phone's map. The fitbid has this feature and it's great not having wear anothe GPS device.
  • They don't do that, since they already make devices that have both GPS and "activity trackers" (Forerunner 15 and 920XT) which will do that. The Vivo's don't transmit data in real time over Bluetooth so far as I know, so using the phone's GPS would be difficult.

If you want a map for activities, why not just track them on your phone? There are free apps that will do that (Strava and RunKeeper on my iPhone both will). Get a Bluetooth HRM and you can even track your heart rate at the same time.

Got it to work on my samsung. I bought the garmin fit app for android $.99 and it tracks using the gps on the phone, just like the fitbit app did for free. Also, seems to sync with the garmin connect app as my running activity shows up without me doing anything additional, pace, elevation & map data are all there. Fire up the fit app, hit start new activity and head out. So far, no duplication of activity when selecting the same from the vivosmart.
  • That's interesting. What I currently do is wear my vivosmart on one wrist and my Forerunner on my other. When I do an activity, the activity is saved on my Forerunner which also tracks by gps.

What you are saying is that I could just replace my Forerunner with the Garmin Fit app. It would also eliminate syncing the activity using Express.
  • I have a Google Play credit so I bought the Garmin Fit app.

At first glance, it looks great.

One issue I have been having with my currenty way of doing things is that I use my Forerunner when I walk or run and also when I cycle. I keep forgetting to change the sport and then when I remember part way I end up with a multisport activity which I have to edit extensively at the end. The Fit app lets me choose in advance so it's tougher to screw that up.

    Thx napertuckytim,

I tried it today. There's nothing regarding heart rate that I could find.

Phil, I'm new to the heart rate monitor and have not used both the phone with fit app and the vivosmart with the heart rate monitor yet, but have used them separately and the information was saved in the detail of my fitness activity. As you stated above, nothing in the fit app for a HRM that I can find either but I connect mine to the vivosmart not the phone. It seems the fit app is just to link your phone's GPS to your activity, still not sure why this isn't a feature in the connect app other than the .99 cost of the fit app. You have inspired me to run tonight and try to get the map data from the phone/fit app and HRM data from the vivosmart tracked to see if they all display in the activity detail. I usually have my phone on me when I bike as well so looking forward to what data the fit app will track for those activities and having it all stored in the connect app's detail.
  • I think the only way it will work is to start an activity on both the vivosmart and the fit app. Then sync the vivosmart and save the phone activity. Note the HRM stats from the vivosmart, manually add HRM info to the FIT activity and then delete the vivosmart activity.

    That's less than optimum.

Just did that, started the activity on both, hit save on both, did a sync to phone and it appears the fit app is overwriting the vivosmart data. You can either track your location using fit app or heart rate when using vivosmart linked to HRM, but not both. I can't even find the heart rate data now, but looked during my run and it was registering on the vivosmart. When you start the fit app it seems to add the location data in place of the heart rate. Makes no sense.

Won't matter to those who don't use a HRM, but certainly don't like the fact I can't get both sets of data now that I have one.

I will try a biking activity tomorrow and see if it does the same thing, don't expect it will be any different though. Maybe they will add the ability to track both in version 1.8.
