I can easily pair my Fenix 2 with my iPhone. Unfortunately Garmin Connect mobile app always states 'disconnected'. Any clues as to what is going on?
Yes, unfortunately; I have the same problem.
The app also mentions there is an update. It's a compliance trick to force you to update the watch. I emailed customer support via the feedback option in the app & they confirmed that you need to update using a computer which is useless to me because I am on holiday without a PC & consequently pretty angry because I can't analyse my runs or post them on twitter to family back home.
At least Garmin apologised for any inconvenience but here's the thing, Garmin: your apology doesn't in any way lesson the inconvenience!!! Compliance tricks just infuriate customers. Customers write reviews & tell their friends about their new $400 watch that they can't use as advertised anymore. A mobile app needs to be mobile, Garmin.
While you have your Fenix 2 connected to your iPhone (using Bluetooth, of course), go to the Devices tab. Using your finger, pull down on the box showing your device. This will cause the app to refresh the connection and recognize your watch. Once that happens, your watch will begin syncing your activities.
I recently had the same problem. I finally was able to get the Fenix 2 version 3.80 and my iPhone 5s connencted. First, I went through the PAIRING process which gave me a status of connected. When the Garmin Connect app went through the auto-synch process, the app generated a synch error. After rebooting the Fenix 2, I was able to synch successfully.
I think the key is after the Fenix takes an update, the watch needs to go through the PAIRING process and needs to be rebooted (turned off/on). Hope this helps.
