Which watch if you have an iPad but no computer?

Hi all,

I am about to buy a GPS watch and I still have an issue I couldn't find the answer....I do not have any computer but only an IPad.

Is it possible to "use" one of the Garmin watch (initial set up, regular updates, extracts of run datas etc...) only from an IPad or, at some points, a computer is compulsory needed?

Many thanks,

Benjamin
  • As far as I can see none of Garmins gear can get firmware-upgrades from a iPad, but at the time of writing both forerunner 220 and 620 can communicate with the Garmin Connect App, making it possible to upload and download workouts/activities from the watch. The initial setup is not needed. The clock can handle all that. You start up, adapt your profiles and so on on your watch.

So the only thing you need to borrow a computer for is the firmware upgrades.

Don't know about the 220 but on the 620 you can upload your activities directly from the watch via Wifi or bluetooth. You can also download firmware via Wifi directly to the watch.

The only problem is weirdly you need to connect the 620 to a computer to setup the Wifi network.

But I guess you could borrow a laptop or computer to do that

    NYZETA is correct.

The majority of the initial setup can be done on the watches themselves, and any Connect account activity can be performed using the Connect Mobile app. Additionally, the Fenix can also be used with the Basecamp Mobile app on compatible iOS devices with regard to routes, tracks, and waypoints. The only function requiring a computer would firmware updates.

I would amend this: you need a computer for firmware updates PLUS workout editing/plannification. Doing it on an iPad is just counter intuitive and does not work straight out of the box (connect garmin in safari on OSX is just ridiculous) and GC on iPad is too basic for such a thing.
