Active Calories - Garmin Connect / Forerunner 955

Hi...  did 3 activities yesterday (that did not overlap).  Individually the activities totaled 1,576 "active" calories (i understand the difference between active and total).  However, Garmin Connect (ios, web, and watch) all have 1,278 "active" calories for the entire day (appearing to capturing only 81%).  Is this a bug/flaw in Garmin Connect when it aggregates data, or is there some algorithm operating behind the scenes that discounts activities when compiling data?

  • Did you use any secondary device, such as Edge, or an HRM Pro / 600? When using multiple devices, the final sum may use, for example, Calories from the Primary Wearable Device, while you expect seeing Calories from Edge. Or there may be another conflict, or incomplete syncing of all devices.

  • yes, my 2 hour bike ride used an Edge... seemed to sync fine as all devices, and web/ios Connect, show the same active and total calorie breakdown for the activity.  but... i suspect this may be contributing to the issue but cannot pinpoint it.  thx!

  • When you use Edge for recording the activity, and wear the watch too, the Calories in the all-day stats come from the watch (Primary Wearable Device), which uses its optical sensor in low-power mode and slow sampling rate, hence the Calories will be lower than those from the Edge. There are two simple solutions:

    • turn off the watch, let it off the wrist, or turn off the optical HR sensor
    • record the activity on the watch, and use Edge just as the extended display of the activity running on the watch
