this app is insane, does it really need permanent background activity and location? It basically keeps checking the location constantly and causes huge battery drain.

Installing Garmin Connect IQ apps on your watch can cause battery drain. Weather and map apps, specifically, can constantly check location pings from the phone, to drain it faster, especially if there is more than one installed.
