Garmin App GPS accuracy on iPhone 17 with CIRQA is horrible, exaggerating pace more than 30%?

I have an iPhone 17 with the Garmin CIRQA, and the accuracy is horrible — so bad that it's exaggerating my pace to marathon-elite-level speeds. My lap statistics for regular runs are useless now. I have to manually edit the distance, but all the laps still show the same incoherent data. I'm on iOS 27 beta, but when I tried Strava using the same phone, it was completely normal. So what's going on, Garmin?"

  • Very probably it is not a problem of the GPS, or of the app, but rather of the accelerometer calibration of Cirqa self. To verify this claim, open the activity in Garmin Connect Web, and in the activity menu under the cogwheel (up right), select the option "Save as Course" - that will show you the true distance recorded on the map, using the GPS of the phone. I bet it will be much more accurate than the distance shown on the activity self.

Unfortunately, Garmin trusts the (very unreliable) estimation from the accelerometer of the device more than the GPS data, so instead of using the GPS distance, it tries to estimate it using your step cadence and the average stride length. Unsurprisingly, the results are then completely skewed, in many cases.

Well, after a couple of activities with external GPS, the calibration will hopefully align better, and the deviation will be smaller. What can also help, is doing a treadmill run (or a walk), and calibrate the distance after completing it.

  • Interesting. The distance in the map is incorrect also! But thank you as at least I have some light on the problem. Will try the calibration also, can't hurt.
