Stopwatch to Strava? (general connect-Strava issue)

I realise that a saved Stopwatch (in my case a 970) is synced over to Strava as an activity.
– Is that the way it supposed to be?

Looks very strange on Strava.

Stopwatches can be used for timing anything. And if you have an activity you will of course start an activity.

  • is synced over to Strava as an activity.

Actually nothing is "synced" to Strava. Strava has the access to the API of Garmin, so they can read all activities of all types, just as any other 3rd party app enabled in your account can do, too. It is up to them which activities they keep, and which ones they reject. And since, AFAIK, there are a few activity types that Strava does not import, there is probably a reason they keep the activity Stopwatch. Or they just simply did not realize such activity type exists, so did not think of filtering it out. I recommend contacting Strava, and suggesting them to add Stopwatch to their filters.

  • If you save it as an activity then it is reasonable that it is transfered as an activity and activiites are synced to Strava.

So, can't you just skip saving it as an activity or do you want it logged in Garmin Connect?

  • You cannot select to save the timer as a activity or something else.
So if the timer is used for taking time of anything (not sport, not activity) and you want to store the result, you save it. There will be a stored times ("Stopwatch") in Garmin Connect - fine. But in Strava there will be an actiivity.

If you don't save it there will be nothing of course.
I will try   idea an see if Strava can filter it correctly.

  • Okay thanks! I will try Strava.
But stopwatch/timer should not be published at all from the Garmin API as an activity at all. It's just a timer not an activity.

  • But stopwatch/timer should not be published at all from the Garmin API

It is not "published". The API is an interface for 3rd parties to access your data. Garmin has no idea which of the data each of the respective 3rd parties wants to use and which not. Finally, someone can come with an idea to create a 3rd party app specifically for handling Stopwatch activities, for some purpose.

If you do not want keeping Stopwatch results in your Connect data, do not store them. You can use the plain and simple stopwatch function without saving it as an activity.

  • ... and BTW, in order to avoid spamming your followers on Strava with hundreds of irrelevant and uninteresting activities, you can simply disable making all your activities visible to them automatically, in Strava settings. Make new activities strictly private by default, and only publish those that you really want to share for some reason. I am sure everyone of your followers will appreciate it, and you'll find it is better for you too.

  • There is an option store the data. If I don't want to save the data for later use, I will not select that option. I promise Slight smile
