Location Services nag message does not stop

Since acquiring a Cirqa, the latest version of Connect Mobile on iPhone relentlessly nags with this message if location services access is denied:
"Garmin Connect Mobile needs access to your location.  Allows you to find and connect to your device via Bluetooth, send your phone location to your device during activities, share location of safety features and more."

The Cirqa connects just fine via Bluetooth with the location setting disabled, despite the dire warning in the dialog.

There is no apparent way to turn this notice off.  The Circa is doing everything I want it to do, and Garmin has given the choice to disable location services to the user.   The app should stop hounding the user for this decision.

The best way to understand this issue is simulate it on the desktop of the manager that approved this "feature".   When modify the link that opens a browser to present this exact image first,  require them to close the dialog, only then can they continue to use their browser.

  • Same problem here. It is either very poor application design or implementation -- most likely a bug, actually. User made a choice. Stop pestering user every time they're trying to use your app. Very annoying indeed. You pay for a product, you expect it to work. Garmin needs to fix this ASAP. Shows a deep disrespect for customers. On the grand scheme of things, the current culture of tracking everyone's every breath needs to stop. Personal data is one's data alone and is meant for their own benefit, nobody else's.

  • Never mind my previous reply. I was wrong. The app actually needs location permission for auto detection of activities when using the Cirqa wrist band -- as long as that is what you want, in most cases -- although activities should also work without location data, I think. The reminders are annoying but likely needed. Perhaps the message could be clearer if it mentioned one can turn off activity auto detection and then the "nagging" reminders go away, which worked for me. I still want the other notifications from the Garmin app, so now that the location reminder is gone, I can turn that back on again. I don't need activity auto detection since I use my Apple Watch for most workouts. I only use Garmin Cirqa for live HR data in Garmin Edge 1050 when cycling and for sleep tracking. The Edge has a built-in GPS chip so I get location then, which is what I want. Love the Garmin Edge 1050. Will likely buy the Tracx when it goes on sale.

  • Well, I guess I was wrong about being wrong. After turning notifications back on, even with automatic activity turned off on cirqa, the requests for sharing location once again started showing up on my phone. Very weird. Hope they fix this so the app becomes more useful for those who do not care for sharing their location all the time.

  • This is a confusing issue.   The location service message is incorrect on several points.   Cirqa requires that location services be "always" rather than "while using the app".   I did a walk with location services as "while using the app", while holding the iPhone during the walk fiddling with the app as a test.   Nothing was detected.  Once I turned on the "always" Cirqa/Connect combo recorded the app.   I have done this particular walk hundreds of times with all of my Garmins (Fenix 5-7x, Enduro 3) and the entire walk is 1.85 miles.   I was .7 miles into the walk when I made the switch and it records the walk as 2.09 miles at a pace over 4 minutes/mile faster than I walked.

I am returning the device to the retailer for a refund.

  • If you have not already done so, you can disable/toggle off "Use phone's GPS" in your main activities:

Activity Options>in GC, I tap on walk>phone GPS toggled off

  • Yes, I did that too. Not sure what did the trick in the end but the notifications are completely gone now. Thanks!

  • Can you please elaborate on this?
With Location Services in "While Using the App" mode in GC activities are not detected.  GC also emits the nag notification multiple times a day.  According to Cirqa documentation, the phone GPS is needed by Circa for activity course tracking.  Doesn't turning off GPS impact device functionality?

Why doesn't location services work with "while using the app"?  If once launches GC, then does an activity, gps coords should be captured.  Additionally, this location setting should turn off the multiple times per day notification, or the notification needs to be restated with the correct location setting requirement.
