Garmin 225 won't won't connect to iphone

Yesterday I tried to upload my run to the Garmin Connect app as normal, but it wouldn't connect and I could see that my Garmin running watch (Garmin 225) wasn't connected.

This has happened before and a quick fix is to choose to forget the device and then add it again. However, I now can't add the device and having followed as many suggestions that I can find, it will still not connect.

The message I get is:

"Cannot Add Accessory - Unable to connect to item. Please try again. If the problem persists, you may need to contact the manufacturer."

As a temporary fix to load my runs I have tried to upload them via a desktop computer via the charging cable and USB, but then I get the following error message:

"The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it."

So I can't currently upload my runs from my Garmin watch to Garmin Connect via the normal watch to phone or watch to computer via USB.

As said, I've tried all of the various fixes I can find, but none of them work.

Please can you help.

Thanks

  • This has happened before and a quick fix is to choose to forget the device and then add it again.

One step is forgetting the device in your phone’s Bluetooth settings, but when adding it back, use the Garmin Connect app. Here’s a typical sequence:

    • In the Garmin Connect mobile app, go to More > Garmin Devices > select the 225 > Remove Device from the 3-dot menu.
    • In your phone’s Bluetooth settings, forget the device.
    • Restart both your phone and watch.
    • Put the watch in pairing mode. Since it's about 11 years old, this is likely Settings > Bluetooth > Pair mobile device.
    • Open the Garmin Connect app and add the watch again.

For the USB cable method, try these steps, testing after each:

    • Clean the metal contact points on both the charging cradle and watch using isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab.
    • If possible, use a different Garmin charging cable (these are still available online, even for older models)
    • Try a different USB port on your computer or a completely different computer.

If nothing else works, I’d try doing a factory reset on the watch and then give it another shot. There might be something corrupted that needs to be cleared. Just keep in mind this will return it to its original out‑of‑the‑box state, and you’ll lose any personal data like watch settings and activity history.

  • I have tried adding the watch again following your recommendation, but it still doesn't work. It's the same process I have now tried many times.

I have done a factory reset as suggested and it will still not work. I am able to get to the part where my Garmin watch shows a 4 digit pairing code, but Garmin Connect just has a spinning wheel and then says:

"Cannot Add Accessory - Unable to connect to item. Please try again. If the problem persists, you may need to contact the manufacturer." and the watch says "Follow steps on Garmin Connect Mobile to pair" with an option to Try Again.

    Please help.

  • Did you try any of these steps for connecting your watch to a computer?

For the USB cable method, try these steps, testing after each:

    • Clean the metal contact points on both the charging cradle and watch using isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab.
    • If possible, use a different Garmin charging cable (these are still available online, even for older models)
    • Try a different USB port on your computer or a completely different computer.
  • I've managed to connect the watch to my computer, but I still can't connect the Garmin watch to Garmin Connect. I was hoping that if I could connect it via a USB there might be a way to connect to Garmin Connect direct, but there is no option.

Since I did a factory reset, I've lost all of my hear rate settings and records. Although I have updated the heart rate zones on my watch, there is no way to send it to Garmin Connect, so when I look at my runs the heart rate zones are all wrong. I also can't send my records to my watch.

Does anyone have a solution to be able to connect my Garmin 225 to Garmin Connect?

Other than not being able to connect the watch to Garmin Connect, the watch works normally.
