Gear tracking doesn't include Commuting as a cycling type

Ideally I'd like to be able to identify gear based on a sensor ID where possible (e.g. by Di2), but until then I want to use the new features by assigning a bike to a cycling type.

Unfortunately while my edge 1050 has Commuting as an activity type, and so does my Epix (albeit called Bike Commute not Commuting), GCM doesn't. It would be helpful to be able to track miles on my road bikes separately from my commuter.

It would also be good to have consistent mapping across devices, its a bit messy at the moment (see below for cycling activity comparison)

  • Found a way round this by setting my Commuting profile as "Commuting" and Road Cycling as "Road", they map to "Cycling" and "Road Cycling" in GCM so can assign my bikes to those activities. Not perfect but OK

  • Commuting isn’t handled consistently on Garmin Connect. Or to say it another way: They broke it Garmin style, due to lack of Communication.

If you record „Commuting“ on the Edge, Connect will not recognize it as commuting but Strava does. In Connect, you have to change the event type to commuting by hand. I dont know if its also the case with „Bike Commute“ on the watches.

In general its not good the activity types on devices and the back end dont line up. There is someone still responsible for this and i think Garmin has to overthink the employment status of this person.

  • I dont know if its also the case with „Bike Commute“ on the watches.

On my Instinct 3, Bike Commute works as expected, and saves with the correct activity type in Connect. Don't you have, by hazard, an Edge model older than the Bike Commute activity type? It was in 2022 that the subcategory was added to the SDK.

  • I don’t know if it’s because Instinct 3 is supported for gear tracking but on my Epix Gen2 recording an activity as bike commute gets saved as cycling. I had a look at the Garmin courses API and Bike Commute isn’t a supported activity. The API list matches what’s seen in GCM. Not saying you’re wrong, just that maybe it’s a legacy API thing.

  • On my Instinct 3, Bike Commute works as expected, and saves with the correct activity type in Connect.

I apologize, I was probably not yet properly awake. In fact it only saves with the expected title, but the type of the activity is just Cycling, just as others reported.

Respectively, the file saves OK, with the right "commuting" sub_sport ID (48), but current Connect simply does not support this sub sport (yet)

  • very interesting. Strava must be using the sub sport ID to class it as a commute. I haven’t seen that in the API (I meant activities API not courses APi in my previous post).
