Accidentally deleted running shoes because Garmin changed the gear selection in Connect

I was trying to change the shoes used in today’s run, so I added the correct shoes and the run then showed two different pairs of shoes, so I deleted the pair I wasn’t using.  What i didn’t know is that Garmin Connect entirely deleted the shoe instead of just removing it from the run.  How do I get the history of that deleted shoe back?

  • Had to manually access all my runs in the last year and add back in the shoes that were accidentally deleted.  There is no undelete function because there seems to be little understanding of the meaning of software QA at Garmin.  I’m beginning to understand why, other than the ridiculous price increases, so many are fed up with Garmin watches.  I can do better.

That was not necessary. You could have enabled the option to automatically add the gear to all previous Runs (or any other category or subcategory).

  • I have 4 pairs of running shoes that I alternate.  Adding the deleted pair of shoes to every previous run wouldn’t work because it would add those shoes to runs that already have other shoes assigned to them.

  • The new way of assigning gear is much worse than I suspected.  In order to assign gear to an activity, one must not only assign specific gear, one must also go to the previously assigned gear and “unassign” or uncheck the previous gear.  Garmin turned a one step process into two steps.

  • I just tested this with my bikes.  It takes 2 separate actions to unassign one of my bikes and assign the other one.  Previosly, Connect allowed you to swap one for tge other, so it only took one step to change gear.   If you don’t do the two steps now required, you end up with two pieces of gear for the same activity.

  • Probably you have one of these gear selected by default to this activity.
You need go to Garmin Connect and change default selection.

I just checked it, since I still do have an old version of Connect on one of my phones, and it was the same. And it makes sense, because otherwise you could not add multiple different gears of the same category to an activity (and yes, it is sometimes needed).

  • Yes, I understand that.  My point is, it now takes more to reassign a default bike or default shoes because I have to unselect/uncheck the current default and then select/check the new default.  In the previous version of Connect, I only had to assign a new default and the previous default would automatically be unassigned.   Also, the new version of Connect warns you if some other gear is already the default but it still allows you to pick ANOTHER piece of gear as default.  You can therefore have a run with 2 or more pairs of shoes or go cycling with 2 or more bikes.

FYI - I can’t make any of these changes on my watch because I have a FR 965 and Garmin doesn’t currently (or probably ever) support gear changes on that model.

  • I also cannot do this on my Descent MK3i which don't have this functionality and similar to your FR probably will never got it.
I'm doing it in the app and for me it is not a problem because I never defined default gear for activities I have more than one gear, I'm just assigning gear I'd used after activity.

    Regards.
