Garmin watch notifications separate to iPhone notifications?

Hi, I see posts on this topic from a few years ago & several months ago, but nothing since iOS 26 came out & nothing since the Forerunner 970 came out. I'm not too hopeful, but at the same time, this is the ONE item that is stopping me from spending AUD $1400 on a Garmin running watch.

I want to separately control what notifications come through to the watch from the phone. That is, only the most important things requiring immediate attention go to the watch. The Garmin support site seems to suggest that the only way to stop notifications coming to the watch is to use the iOS Settings --> Notifications --> <app name> --> turn off the notification centre.

The problem with this is that the Notification Centre is the place where notifications of the *lowest priority* go. That is, no need to be on lock screen & no need to show a banner. For an app where the notification is unimportant, I want Notification On, and Watch Off. This doesn't seem possible.

Garmin implies this is an iOS problem. So does their competitor Polar. However, The Withings watch I have been using for the past 7 years doesn't have this issue & uses its own app to control it's own notifications. Likewise, Pebble before that. And Fitbit. And Amazfit. And probable others as well.

So, my question is, has this Garmin/Polar problem been fixed with Forerunner 970/iOS 26? This is the SINGLE issue that is stopping me from buying a Garmin (or Polar) running watch.
