Can the Watch Face show miles instead of km?

I've just bought a Garmin Vivoactive 5. Impressed with the tracking, does what I want it to.

However, one of the main things I want to track/see is how many miles I've walked. I'm not really interested in steps at all.

Even though, as far as I can tell, I've updated everything to "miles", I still see "18K" for example on the home screen. Is it possible to display this in miles?

If not, is there another watch, like the Forerunner 265. That will do this? I've seen screenshots with "5 mi" on the screen but unsure if that's a running 'activity' rather than everyday walking distance?

As an aside, I've link this to Apple Health. When I have "Connect" as the primary app for tracking distance, it matches the watch (ignores phone tracking). However if I have my Phone about it, it seems to add distance to the phones total. But not double the amount, like adding phone + Vivoactive.

When I first got the watch I went for a regular walk and kept the iPhone + Garmin tracking separate. Bother were similar. Say if the iPhone was 4 miles, Garmin was 4.2 miles. So not sure why when my phone is the 'priority' it'd be 1.5x the value on the Garmin? Hope that makes sense - if not maybe I'll start a separate topic with screenshots!

Thanks,
Steve

  • There are 2 settings locations in the Garmin Connect app. Make sure they are both set correctly:

    • More > Garmin Devices > vivoactive 5 > System > Format > Units > Distance > Units = Miles
    • More > Settings > User Settings > Measurement Units > Statute

Check these 2 settings then sync your watch. Also check in the watch itself. Hold the lap (bottom) button for 3 seconds > Setting> System > Format > Units > Distance = Miles

  • Hi there,

I can confirm all those settings are set to Miles. But the watch screen always shows km. I'd upload screenshots to validate but looks like you need to host somewhere.

Maybe the watch face always shows km? It seems to show steps until 1km is hit, then switches to showing distance in km.

Bit strange if you'd set everything in miles, that it wouldn't update here as well?

    Thanks for the reply!

  • You can simply drag or copy/paste into the reply massage.

    Such as...

I still see "18K" for example on the home screen

Are you sure this is 18 km and not 18,000 steps?

  • It seems to show steps until 1km is hit, then switches to showing distance in km.

The Steps value does not show km, it shows the number of steps. The 'k' stands for a thousand, so if you see 14.1k (or perhaps 14k1) it means you did over 14100 steps. You cannot change it on the given watchface, but you can chose a different watchface, which uses the exact number of steps even at higher counts

  • Thanks, is there anyway to show distance walked on the watch face? From looking through all the watch faces it does seem so? Anything with "miles" is blank, so I guess linked to an activity?

Is this the same with all watches, like the Forerunner?

  • Doh! I think my phone hadn't paired with the app yet, so coincidentally when I checked they were very similar/close to each other. Face palm

  • Is this the same with all watches, like the Forerunner?

It differs from watchface to watchface and from model to model. On some models it may be more common than on others.

Thanks, is there anyway to show distance walked on the watch face?

If you mean the steps converted to distance, then you can see it on the Steps widget. Depending on the model, you may need to scroll through the screens of the Steps widget to get to the screen with the distance. As for getting the distance directly on the watchface, it may depend on the model again, but AFAIK it is mostly not available among the data fields, so you would probably have to search a 3rd party Connect IQ watchface in the CIQ store, offering such functionality.

  • Thanks for all the info. Not displaying miles isn't the end of the world, I can just set the steps to the average of what that is for me. Also, originally when I was looking around at Whoop/Aura etc I wasn't ever bothered about a display, as I'd just check the phone - but seems since I got the watch that has changed and become a bit obsessed haha.

    Thanks again!
