Active calories not syncing on Garmin Connect

Hi there, it's been now more than one year having this issue from time to time (once every 10 activities approx.). After making a nice cycling ride of over 2 or 3 hours, if I have burnt near 1500 kcal, these are displayed on my activity summary in both Edge 1050 device and the activity summary if I look it on Garmin Connect. However, when I go to the calories section on my health Garmin Connect summary, it only appear like if I didn't make the ride, this is 102 active kcal at 13:10 on this sunday. Of course this is not right, as my device is showing over 1500 kcal on that activity.

This happened months ago with my Edge 840, and one of the reasons I upgrade device was to finish with this annoying software issue, but seems it has nothing to do with the device. I did reset and reinstall Garmin Connect on my iphone and the issue keeps occuring from time to time. Of course I contacted the support center but they do not tell me any reason and they say it all looks ok, but of course there is something wrong. Unfortunately I do not find any answer anywhere. Is there someone having the same problem? Of course is not a big deal, the other fitness inputs sync well, like training status, body battery, training readiness, training status, training load... but it really annoys me a lot that the calories for some reason are not syncing well (just sometimes). I hope Garming can give a solution for that

  • Calories come always from the Primary Wearable Device (the watch), as long as you wear it. The solution is either not wearing the watch, or connecting the HRM strap to it, and recording the activity with it. There are countless of threads about the same topic here on the forum, so you may find more information and tips, if you look it up.

  • Hi Trux, thanks for your answer. Yes I have seen there are many threads regarding this issue. But still seems something is wrong. My main point is, why this is happening only 10% of the times? If it was like you say, any time I do an activity wearing the watch device should be like this, and it's not, it just happen once in a while

Actually most of the times I can see my total calories burnt going up while I am cycling on my Fenix screen, which to me looks like the watch itself knows you are doing an effort / activity. FYI, the HRM strap is of course linked to my Fenix too, but the activity I do record it on my Edge.

I get it if the watch sometimes does not notice you are doing an activity, but it's a pitty it does not sync this data after uploading it on the Garmin Connect. To me this is something needs to be fixed by Garmin. When I look into my MFP app, burnt calories are correct there... so, if that app has them right, Connect should do the same

I can tell you that this was not happening in the past when I was using my old Edge 830 and my watch Forerunner 745. Anyway, I just hope they fix it in the future. Garmin support center never told me not to wear the watch though, so this can be a good advice perhaps.

    Thanks

  • It happens when the watch records different HR than the strap.

I get it if the watch sometimes does not notice you are doing an activity

Fenix does not start any activities automatically. Unless you start an activity or HR broadcasting manually, the HR sensor stays in the low power mode, and records only 2 min averages.

I can tell you that this was not happening in the past when I was using my old Edge 830

That's correct. It changed only with the new generations of Edge, starting with Edge 840/1040

  • Hello again Trux, just FYI, even making the steps you say, Connect is still not syncing. I contacted the support, and they told me to switch my Edge 1050 into primary training device. Made no single change. Actually it came from a 10% in the past, to do it now at every ride. Active calories are not syncing at all, there's no way to do it

I contacted Garmin support again, and they told me it's really weird and they are looking into it with the engineering team. I wonder if there's something wrong with my Edge 1050... on my last 3 rides it crashed also and then was rebooted. What a pitty

  • Hello , thanks for your post.

We are aware that the active calories for recorded/timed activities can be greater than the "All-Day" active calories in Garmin Connect, and there are a few threads on this topic.

This has to do with how your Primary Wearable device sends wellness and all-day activity data to Garmin Connect vs. how your watch and Edge can upload individual activities. We are currently investigating this and I've added your account to our report so that you can be notified.

You can avoid this happening by either 1) Not wearing your wearable device during Edge cycling activities or 2) Recording your ride using your wearable (fenix) and displaying the ride data on your Edge via Extended Display Mode.

  • Clayton thanks for your answer. Garmin support Spain already has a ticket on this matter and they are investigating it indeed. Primary device is set on my Edge 1050, but still like this, the data is not syncing well sometimes. But is not just a deviation between active calories between activity and normal status, the difference is coming from some data from the watch overwritting the data from the Edge, because sometimes I have even seen the calories displayed correctly, and after some minutes, the wrong data shows up again. And it's not only calories but intensity minutes etc.

Your first solution seems to work most of the times, but in one of the rides I did, even leaving the watch at home, it still happened. But I agree, seems it works most of the times. However this is ok when you are starting your ride from home, but sometimes you just load your bike and go somewhere in your car and spend the day outside, or if you do some bikepacking days, you really want your watch with you during this time, so it's not really a solution then.

To record the activity with the Fenix, well, this is something which looks ok, but sincerely if I purchased the Edge 1050 is because I want this last generation device to work properly and use it as my recording device. Fenix is ok for other activities, but my Edge seems to track much more data and I want it to be actually recording when I am cycling, instead of doing it with my Fenix. But I will consider. I just really hope Garmin can come up with a solution soon, I have read other people struggling with the same thing. Overall is not a big deal, but it is a bit annoying that this is happening with two top end products like a Fenix 8 and an Edge 1050. But thanks Clayton for your comments and feedback, I really appreciate. Cheers
