Audio prompts not working

Audio prompts don’t work properly.

garmin connect settings look ok, but fenix 7x gives me issues.

sometimes I get audio prompts , sometimes not at all entire run, sometimes only at first interval, sometimes at few intervals but then it stops, sometimes I stop getting audio prompts mid run but then all the prompts suddenly all come one after the other at end of the run!!

also, the audio prompts volume cannot be changed independently from the phone volume for me (iPhone 16 pro).

this problem is ultra annoying and forces me to have to look at the watch, while I need to be able to watch the terrain, and in wintertime I want to wear longsleeves covering my hands…

Ps:

all devices and apps are up to date.

i had my headphones (Shokz openfit) linked to both my iPhone and to fenix 7x, and thought that might be the reason, but removing the link with the fenix 7x didn’t solve the problem.

any suggestions/solutions?
many thanks!

  • any suggestions/solutions?

Try wired earphones - it will tell you whether the problem comes from the earphones link.

  • Thx for the suggestion, I will try that.

Would assume though that Garmin delivers products that work properly, and the necessary settings/manuals.

Can it really be that in 2024 such mature products and tech fail in its basic functionality??

Very weird that I find people mentioning this issue for 5+ years, and it keeps happening.

You wrote the link drops even when the headphones are linked to the phone, not to the watch. In that case the problem either comes from the headphones, or from the phone, in which case it would not be Garmin to be blamed for it. Another possibility is that the BT connection between the watch and the phone drops - you can exclude or confirm it by looking at the app. If the BT link is functional, there is a green dot at the watch icon, and the HR and Steps glances continuously update the live data coming from the watch.

  • Just realised I forgot a few potentially importants thing to mention:

    1. my routine is:

    - put on all gear, including: hrm run cheststrap, Ontracx G-force sensor (BT connection), openfit earphones (autoconnect)

    - launch spotify playlist

    - launch run via fenix 7x

    2. During the observed audio prompt issues I never loose Spotify connection.

    3. Thoughts:

    - does continuous Spotify music proove sufficiently that BT connection between iPhone and earphones is up continuously?  (ie related to the case when I plain stop getting audio prompts from my GC app)

    - does the case when I sometimes stop getting audio prompts from GC app during my run, but I do receive ALL so far missed audio prompts at once after I have finished my run proof perhaps something else? Eg a kind of overload of audio stream, which sometimes gets buffered and released all at once… most likely my Spotify playlist is still running at that time, not sure though…

  • does continuous Spotify music proove sufficiently that BT connection between iPhone and earphones is up continuously?

If music plays without dropout then the connection earphones-phone works, of course, otherwise you would not hear anything.

Possibly, but since I do not experience any such issues, I cannot really confirm it.

BTW, you are posting to the Android forum, while speaking about iPhone. It would be better moving your thread to the iPhone forum, for receiving relevant answers. However, I use both Android, and iPhone, and the audio prompts work without any delays for me. I do not use Spotify though, I usually just listen the radio (using the native iPhone Music app). I can only recommend testing it without Spotify, and using the wired earphones. That should help you to pinpoint from where the problem comes.

  • iPhone 16 pro

Moved thread to Garmin Connect Mobile iOS forum.

  • I’ve also sent this issue to Shokz, as I’m wondering if they might know about this and perhaps can help.

Considering the BT connection between iPhone and openfit Shokz earphones would be proven to be working continuously, what do you think I could learn from the test with wired earphones? It could prove GC app does send the prompts at the expected time.

I plan to test with wired headphones, but just wonder what I can find out from it, and how it can help me progress to the solution. Goal remains to get the wireless headset working of course.

If memory serves me correctly, I have had similar experience with my iPhone SE. Which would then likely eliminate the hardware iPhone itself, but would still leave as potential cause by : BT connection software, or GC app, or the earphones hardware or software.

BT interference seems unlikely as I can’t see how that would have me get a stream of audio prompts one after the other at end of run.

I thought about potentially me not hearing the audio prompts as the music might make it not hearable… related to me not being able to set audio  prompts volumes independently from phone volume, but also then it doesn’t lead to a stream of prompts at end of run.

  • Update with today’s experience:

Run 1: 12K interval run, originating from Adidas running app, launched via fenix 7x. Up until interval 17 or so, I received the audio prompts fine, as also the Spotify playlist. As of interval 18 till interval 24 no audio prompts received anymore. (Ps: on January 2nd, the audio prompts also stopped working as of interval 18 or so… coincidence?…) Prompts expected: interval pace expected at start and actual at end, heartbeat at interval end, pace too low/high/in-range during intervals. At end of run, no delayed prompts appeared.
Walk activity started immediately after run1, no audio prompts, but none expected.
Run2: just selected start run activity on fenix 7x, not an interval run just simple select ‘run’. It was started immediately after the walk activity. no audio prompts received, while they were expected at the 1KM mark.
During all of the above activity, the Spotify playlist was continuously playing, so Bluetooth connection with iPhone was working.
The headset used in the above tests was not my Shokz openfit wireless headset this time, but Aftershockz aeropex wireless earphones, linked to my iPhone 16 pro.
Ps: many similar issues mentioned on Garmin user forum, some years old. This is bound to be different phones, different headsets, and different software versions. Only few elements are common I think in all these: the Bluetooth link facilitating the sound connection, and the Garmin connect app sending the prompts. Or am I missing something here?
  • Found a rare Garmin reply in this forum… trying that too

I just found this on the forum, did now approach 1, the soft reset of the watch. I will try the effect later today with my Shokz openfit (with my normal setup: earphones linked to iPhone 16, not linked to watch, while playing Spotify playlist). Curious if this helps…
