V02 max not updating (Fenix 8)

I have been using my Fenix 8 for a while but its not updating the VO2 max.

According to this article: support.garmin.com/.../ my VO2 max should be calculated when doing Zwift rides. I have my Zwift account linked to my Garmin Connect account and am meeting the requirements specified in the article.

Any idea why I am not getting a VO2 max?

I have done two Zwift rides so far and also several outdoor rides (but I don’t have a power meter so only the Zwift rides have power data)

update:

After linking my KICKR trainer to my Fenix sensor and capturing the ride both via Zwift as well as via the Fenix I got my vo2 max score Tada

  • The articles are somewhat contradictory. The article I linked says it won’t capture vo2 max from am indoor ride but it will from Zwift when the accounts are linked. But it didn’t.

Today I added my KICKR trainer as a sensor to my Fenix and captured the indoor ride on my Fenix as well as via Zwift. After this ride I did get a vo2 max.

This suggests that it works similar to Intensity minutes, i.e. that it needs to be captured on the device and cannot come from Zwift.

Unless vo2 max is only shown after x number of rides and today I coincidentally had enough rides.

  • I think the biggest factor is having heart rate data along with a power meter. Sounds like the kickr is a power meter?

  • It is, it’s a smart trainer so it provides power data. It makes sense that it needs power data to calculate vo2 max, the main question is whether that data can come from third party apps (Zwift / trainerroad) or not. Based on what I experienced it seems it can only calculate it when captured directly by the watch.

but the article i linked suggest it should work via third party apps. So that part seems broken. Anyway, I need to record it anyway to get my Intensity minutes so I can live with it, just  confusingly documented.

Do Activities Recorded With Other Apps Count Towards VO2 Max?

Qualifying activities from the following apps can contribute towards your VO2 Max:

    • Tacx TrainingTm App | Tacx TrainingTm Desktop app

    • Zwift

    • TrainerRoad

    • ROUVY

Activities recorded from these apps do not generate a VO2 Max reading by themselves. The activities are post processed using a Garmin device and Garmin Connect to generate a reading. For your VO2 Max to update from a supported fitness app, you must meet these requirements:

  • Do you have HR data in your activities from Zwift?

  • Yeah it has HR (from a cheststrap) and power data from the KICKR
