Activates in mobile app

Why does the mobile app need to reach out to the connect website for activity data?  There is an issue with the connect site, so my activity doesn't show in the app.  I know it has already pulled the data because it's in strava, but it doesn't show in the mobile app.  Other data pulls directly from the watch and goes to the app, i can see my current heart rate, but not my run.
