What is the courses file type sent to my Edge 530?

Using iOS, I saved one of my bike ride activities as a course. I then sent the course to my Edge 530. What is the file type that is sent to my Edge unit? FIT? GPX? Where can I find this information definitively on the Garmin support pages?

My new process is: On GC, from an activity click on the gear wheel in upper right... select send course to device... open Garmin Express... Install course on Edge 530. The dowloaded file on my Edge is a .fit file. Which I'm told has turn by turn directions.* The option to "enable turn prompts in GC" never shows up. And I've never found the "Turn Notifications" image you copied in GC.
